High-Risk Pregnancy

Parathyroidism

Hi there!  This is my first post on The Bump but I spend a lot of time on The Nest.  My husband and I are TTC and if we do get pregnant, it would be considered high risk.  Parathyroidism is pretty rare in child rearing years so when I met with the high risk OBGYN they didn't have a lot of knowledge.  Just wondering, if by chance, anyone on here has the same thing.  I know it's a long shot but thought I would try.

Re: Parathyroidism

  • No advice, but I would definitely look into finding a Dr. who has experience or more knowledge with your condition. I did a brief search about parathyroidism, and I would definitely want to see a Dr. who had a clear plan regarding how he would treat the pregnancy BEFORE I got pregnant! GL TTC.

He did have a clear plan and thought it would be safe to have a baby.  He just didn't have personal experience with treating it.  There are only about 150 documented cases in the world of women having this and being pregnant.  The thing about it is that most people have it when they're older and the ones that are younger, have surgery to correct the problem. I already had the surgery and it didn't solve my levels.  I know what you're saying though.  I don't know that I'm going to find someone that has already treated someone with this but I might do a little more research on different doctors.

  • i wonder if i have this condition, but i am still trying to get to the bottom of my health issues. my advice, based on my own experience, is to see a specialist. i believe they are called perinatologists. my OB claimed he was an expert on everything ( i am being a little dramatic, i don't really like the guy anymore), but he wasn't. haha. so yeah, i think a specialist would have more expertise for you...

I think I did go see a perinatologist.  I think that's just another name for a High Risk OBGYN.  He also consulted a neonatologist.  Anyway, my endocrinologist( that treats the parathyroidism) was the one that recommended him.  Let me know if you have any questions about your own condition.  I have been dealing with this for many years...long before we were TTC.  I have seen many specialist so do have some knowledge about it.
