we have a colgate foam mattress...it's not the one recommended in baby bargains but similar (just slightly less firm) - i think it's the classica II maybe? can't remember now. but we've been happy with it.
it wouldn't hurt to go ahead and register for the crib and mattress since those are bigger items
We also have a Colgate foam mattress, I think it's called Visco II? It's supposed to be double-sided, so that it's really firm on one side for the crib, then just a little softer on the other side, which you use for the toddler bed. Probably unnecessary to have this feature, but it was purchased as a gift, and it's really nice.
I like the Colgate foam mattresses, as they are generally very firm, and have very square corners, features which are very safe.
We got the Athena Daphne Crib in White and the Colgate Classica I Foam Crib Mattress in White, both rated high on Baby Bargains. My dad gifted both to us...the crib he found for around $325 from a different retailer even through we registered for it on Amazon. I like that it has a ton of storage and built in changing station although we just stopped using it because Libby is too long and too heavy for it now.
That said, we are bed-sharing and she has not slept one night in her crib. She does nap in there, on occassion, and plays in there while I clean her room or fold diapers or clothes and put them away. Before she was born all I wanted was to get the crib and set it up and in retrospect, we could have waited. Or not gotten one at all. Or gotten one that I could "side car" to our bed, since I am considering doing that now that she's getting bigger and we only have a queen sized bed. I blogged about it here:
Anyway, you never know until they get here, but if you already think you're going to co-sleep and possibly bed-share you might just want to wait on the crib purchase.
We are getting Colgate Classica III. It has the same rating as the Classica I but this is double sided (firm side for babies, softer side for toddlers). When I checked the other night, www.greatbeginningsonline.com have the Classica III anti-bacterial version for sale (~$130+). www.treasurerooms.com have the Classica III for $149.99 (it normally goes for $160).
We have the Colgate Classica I. It's lightweight and easy to change sheets on. It's also *very* firm, which is supposed to be good for safety.
However, I have trouble getting A to nap on it -- he wakes every time I put him in the crib, yet will settle in just fine on blankets on the floor, on the bed, or even the car seat. I've been wondering if that has anything to do with the feel of the mattress. He will sleep on it during the night (may take a few tries), and he still wakes up every 3-4 hours... but that might just be him and have zero to do with the mattress. I have read at least one other Amazon review with similar complaints, though overall it seems to be loved by most.
we bought a safety 1st foam mattress with bamboo cover from costco - contemplated an organic but ultimately didn't want to shell out the $$ for a true organic one.

I really like it - it's super snug in the crib.
