Had out Baby Girls!!!

Our girls, Katelynn & Leah, were born on Monday July 5 at 34w4d. I had been on bed rest for 2 weeks for gestational hypertension, and Leah's growth had been very static for the last five weeks. So her IUGR combined with by hypertension got me admitted for delivery after my weekly appointment and growth scan.

I had a c-section because Leah, the smaller twin, was presenting first and Katelynn was breech. A few minutes after I received the spinal and was laid down, Katelynn's heart rate dropped. I don't even know what it dropped to, but it was enough for the anesthesiologist to immediately call for the surgeons, and for everyone else to start moving very, very quickly to get me cleaned and draped. All of the sudden we went from just the anesthesiologist & resident, and then 2 or 3 nurses, being in the room to tons of people - all the pedi teams, my surgeons, etc. I'm FREAKING OUT because DH wasn't in the OR yet and I was so worried they had forgotten to get him. My anesthesiologist ended up going to get him and he made it in just in time. I actually think that they had started my incision before he got there, but he made it before they delivered the babies.

Katelynn ended up being born first and weighed 5 lb 1.8 oz. Leah weighed 2 lbs 15.8 oz. Both were crying right after delivery. They held Katelynn up for us to see her but wanted to get her to the NICU because her heart rate was still a bit slow. DH was able to hold Leah for several minutes before they took her up to the NICU. They are both in the NICU but doing incredibly well. Both were off of any oxygen by Wednesday morning, and neither needed CPAP. (We did do the steroid shots around 29 weeks). They moved from the Level III to Level II NICU on Thursday. Leah is in an isolette to help her regulate her body temperature. Their feedings continue to increase, though they had to get an NG tube because they were struggling to take the whole bottle.

C-section healing is going well. I'm not in too much pain (though I'm sure the meds help with that) and I'm moving around pretty well too. Due to what ended up being sort of an emergency situation they did a vertical incision through the first layers, but were able to do a horizontal uterine incision. I figure I never wore a bikini before I was pregnant, so there's no reason to worry that the scar is going to ruin my rockin' bikini bod now. =)

We're back and forth a lot from the hospital but I already have so many questions so I'm sure I'll be posting more this week. I need to figure out how to put a picture in my signature now!
