High-Risk Pregnancy

Asherman's anyone?

It's been 10 weeks since my D&C and I still have no AF. At around 8 weeks I started freaking out about Asherman's Syndrome. I went in and had blood work and it looked like I had ovulated but I did not have a period.

I am on Provera right now that I started yesterday but asked my doctor about Asherman's. He said that if the provera doesn't bring a cycle he is worried about Asherman's. He said my progesterone level was at 5.8 when they thought I ovulated but normally would be 10-11 so maybe it just wasn't enought to bring AF.

I'm still holding out hope that is the case but want to gather information to move to the next step if not.

Anyone have experience with this?

I had a D&C for my second miscarriage that caused scar tissue to develop.  I did get my period but it wasn't normal for me.  It was a different color (orange like) and had inconsistent flow.  My periods were all over the place anyway even following my first natural miscarriage but the difference in color made me think that something was up.

I had a HSG that showed something strange up by my left tube.  Then I had a HSN that made it seem like my uterus was totally normal.  I wasn't getting pregnant easily like I had before so the RE wanted to start me on Clomid.  I suspected that there was something more going on inside of me so asked if we could do a hysteroscopy first.  She agreed and found scar tissue and banding in my uterus.  It was removed and I was given the go-ahead to start TTC once one cycle has passed.  I got pregnant the very first cycle TTC with my DD.  It wasn't exactly a totally easy pregnancy but she was born healthy at 41w 5d.

We TTC again and found out at 6 weeks that the baby wasn't developing.  I didn't want another D&C since I had such a negative experience from the first one so waited for my body to pass the pregnancy on its own.  At 11 weeks, I started to hemorrage and had to go to the ER.  The sac was stuck at the cervix and my body was trying to force it out with blood.  I had a manual aspiration to remove the sac.  I got pregnant with this baby three months later.

With this pregnancy, I have placenta previa and marginal cord insertion.  I also had placenta previa at the beginning of the pregnancy with my DD.  Placenta previa has a higher incidence in women who have had surgical procedures on their uterus.  I don't know if the marginal cord insertion also results from this.

I wish you the best of luck.  It is good that your doctor is taking this seriously.  That's a great first step if you do have Asherman's.

I am so sorry for your loss.

  • I have Asherman's Syndrome. I got it after a D&C from a miscarriage and I never got my period back.  The hysteroscopy is the best way to diagnose this.  I didn't really trust the doctors I knew to perform the surgery to remove the scar tissue, so I paid out of pocket and flew to LA to have an Asherman's specialist perform the surgery.  It was the best money I ever spent.  I am now almost 25 weeks pregnant.  If the provera doesn't bring on your period, you should check out the ashermans.org website and do some research before you let anyone do surgery on you.

Thanks Monkey. Congrats on your PG! That does give me hope that even if this is the case I can still be normal again. I have been to that site and joined. I assume you went to one of the A list doctors?

  • I did.  I went to Dr. March.  He's amazing.  He scheduled a consult with me right away and scheduled the surgery as soon as I was able to arrange my trip to LA.  I didn't want to take any chances or waste given my age (I'm now 40).  After the surgery I was on hormones for 2 months and the first month I was given the go ahead to TTC, I got pregnant.  I'm considered high risk because of all the complications with my uterus, but so far my pregnancy has been uneventful.  I do get a lot of ultrasounds and extra tests done.

The hardest part of this journey was trying to get diagnosed.  After not getting AF for 2 months, they discovered that I had retained tissue from the D&C (so I thought - great at least they know what the problem is).  However, after a repeat D&C, I still didn't get my period.  I then tried Provera and nothing.  Then they tried an SHG which didn't show the scar tissue for some reason.  I finally convinced my doctor to do a hysteroscopy which clearly showed the scar tissue.  This whole process took about 1/2 a year.  Hopefully the provera works for you - but if not - be your own advocate and insist on getting testing done.  I should also mention, they did a million blood draws to check for all sorts of other issues - including menopause.

Thanks so much for sharing your story. I'm hoping AF comes with the provera but if not, sounds like I need to insist on a hysteroscopy from the get go.

It relieves me to see so many are able to go on and have successful pregnancies.

  • Just as an FYI....when I had my d&c four years ago, it took me 7 months to get my period.  Not that this is what you want to hear, but my body was all F'd up and it just took that long.  I had u/s done, had numerous blood tests done and was put on provera twice and nothing happened.  I was even put back on BCP for 3 months and that didn't help.  Once I decided no more pills or hormones b/c I was fed up, my period finally came.

I thought the worst too and spent all my time online trying to find something wrong w/ me and really there wasn't anything, I just needed time.
