Yeast Infections while pregnant :(

I was prescribed Diflucan (the one pill) but I am not 100% sure I have a yeast infection. Only symptom I have is itching. My question is if Diflucan is safe to use while pregnant. And yes, I know an OB prescribed it for me but I am having some doubts about it because the pharmacist even questioned it. Anyone's help would be appeciated! Thanks!!

Re: Yeast Infections while pregnant :(

  • No clue but I googled...I know helpful and it said tell your doc if your prego, obviously you are.  I'd maybe double check, here's the site I looked at.

    Under special precautions.

  • I would try some natural remedies first...I've had them before and have never had to take anything for it. Just stay away from breads, eat some pro biotic yogurt, wash well and wear cotton undies (and none at night) and that should help :)

  • You should be able to schedule an appt if you're not 100% sure....I don't know how your doc's office is but they usually get you in the next day when you tell them it's a suspected yeast infection. That way, they can do a culture and confirm whether it's yeast or bacteria.  I also questioned my OB when she rx'd Diflucan, but she assured me that it was alright.  I guess every doc has a different opinion and level of tolerance for rx'ing things but just wanted to share what my OB said.
  • I definitely had one early in my pregnancy and my dr. did not OK drugs at the time.  I used a probiotic called Femdophilus (Whole Foods) and it worked great!  Yogurt might night be enough.  Also if you're just itching and not having major discharge I'd try the natural remedies first.  A yeast infection will not harm your baby at this point.
  • I got one at 18 weeks! It was my first time having one and I hope its the last! When I called my OB he told me to do the 7 day Monistat pack. (Spelling I cannot remember.)

Just wanted to tell you what he told me to do so you might have another option. It was gone in 3 days. Im guilty of only going to day three.

    Good Luck

I just got over one, I got one pg with DD too. My OB approved Monistat both times.

  • My OB will not ok diflucan.  I have had chronic YI while pregnant.  I have taken monistat and then prescribed teracol cream.  I went in three times in the beginning for a culture to make sure it was yeast though.  I'd see your doc if you aren't sure.
  • I had a yeast infection while pregnant with DD.  I was just told to use Monistate over the counter and it went away immediately. I did go in and see my doctor to confirm it was yeast.
  • I would just be careful with any medication while pregnant. I know some are safe...but my husband came home with Advil one day when I had a migraine and the pharmacist swore it was safe for me to take...and I knew it wasn't and confirmed with telehealth that I shouldn't take it. Monistat is one I read you should be careful with is all.
  • I went to my OB at 8 weeks due to spotting and I was diagnosed with a yeast infection.  She prescribed Diflucan and I filled the script and took it. I was so nervouse about the spotting that I didn't even think to question the doc. The pharmacist said he was legally required to let me know that there are precautions around taking it.  I am not a firm believer that the doctors word is the end all/ be all.  There are some real idiot doctors out there.  So you need to trust your instinct on this one.
  • If you are looking for a natural remedy use vinegar .. place on cotton ball and pat down there. My grandma swears by it and my mother swears by it and I honestly swear by it. It doesn't smell nice but it usually heals them in a day!

  • sometimes i'm itchy down there and i think its a YI, but its just vaginal dryness.  i put vaseline down there (not inserted inside) and that helps.  my dr has told me its ok to use monistat and if that didn;t help, there is a rx cream he can prescribe.  i have taken the diflucan pill when i wasn't pregnant and found it didn't work too well.

i know this won't help anyone right now, but if you are prone to YI when not pregnant, this natural supplement called AZO Yeast worked great for me.  You can take it everyday.  After a while I stopped taking it all together and my body stopped producing the excess yeast.

I also was diagnosed with a YI yesterday.  I went in because I am having some spotting and burning when I pee, but no itching.  They keep telling my it's a YI and not a UTI.  My OB prescribed 2 different creams, Clorimazole and Terconazole.  I am also nervous about taking them.  I just want the spotting to stop because it's scary and been going on since Wed.

  • I used to get them all the time (probably one long recurring infection) until my OB tried a different Rx drug. Diflucan never did anything for me b/c I guess I have a weird resistant yeast strain. I have one again now for the first time in more than 2 years and it SUCKS. It's been SO itchy! I do everything right in terms of underwear, soaps, drying carefully, what I eat, etc but for whatever reason I seem to be prone to getting them. Yogurt also never did a thing for me even though I ate it like it was going out of style. Anyway, so I don't know about diflucan, but my doc said the OTC products were safe and that the Rx (Terazole) I'm on is OK.

  • I was told to just take Monistat, but to opt for the longer treatment period as the medicine isn't as strong....worked just fine! Good Luck.

  • Thank you ladies. I have an appointment for a regular OB check up on Friday so I will wait and ask then-when someone can actually LOOK at me. :)
