Houston Babies

This is kinda gross, but...

Coop and I have been going in circles with the biting.  He's gotten better, but he seems to have this new fascination with chewing on my nipple before he starts to suck.  I do all the right things and pull him off and I thought we'd gotten past it but I guess he chewed/bit more last night that I thought he did.  This morning I started pumping and looked down to find pink milk in one of the bottles!!  What is crazy is that it wasn't painful at all.  So...I tossed the milk and quit pumping that one (and I hope when I pump shortly that it's not still bleeding) but is it ok for him to nurse there?  I mean, if the pump was getting blood I'm sure he did...and if a little blood gets in the milk should I toss it?

((really dumb question))

Re: This is kinda gross, but...

  • I don't know the answer really, but I had bleeding early on and continued to nurse him.  I distinctly remember watching the milk turn pink as I pumped.  I tossed the milk because it grossed me out but kept feeding from that side.  It seems like at the time I read (or was told) that it was OK but I can't remember the source of that.

Sorry he's biting, hope you heal quickly.

My big boy is bounding towards 4! Baby brother coming in October!

  • you don't have to toss the milk, it might be unsightly, but is not harmful to baby.

when my dd was born we brought him home from the hospital, 9 pounds and healthy.  that first night he spit up a little bit and it was tinged with what we thought was blood, of course we called pedi and they said watch it closely and call tomorrow.  later that night he spit up more stuff that had blood in it.  called pedi and went to Hermann Hospital ER.  they wouldn't let me feed him all night, thinking he had something wrong inside his intestines.  i asked for a pump and it took about 3 hours to get it (we were very unhappy with this wait).  once i got it and pumped there was blood in my milk.  docs said it was no problem, just grossed us out.  i just didn't know i was bleeding because he was so new and hadn't started pumping.

good luck with your little one.

  • I know this one! They call it strawberry milk in the NICU. :)

Seriously, I had an ounce of blood in my milk during my horrible time at TCH. (Docs and medical were good - it was just not a good experience and my shredded nipples were part of that.)

They fed him that milk. It was gross. However, they say it doesn't matter.
