H4M

Yes, we will be doing a home birth. I had a birth center birth in this same state with my daughter and couldn't have been more pleased - well I could have...my ONLY complaint was that I had to travel to and from. I wish I could have stayed put at home. Hence the home birth this time.

NT scan = routine? NO but its definitely an option to most women in metro areas. In more rual areas I think you'd have to travel to a trained tech to get one.

So the progesterone is a big freakin hot issue with me and I'm pissed I didn't stand up for myself before. My clinic wants a reading of 25 once PG and mine was 24. Progesterone (like HCG) flux'es throughout the day so a draw 30 mins later could have yeilded a much higher result. Anyway, because I fell below their threshhold by 1 reading point they DEMANDED I go on it. I'm currently weaning off of 100mg/day vaginal (that can also be taken orally although they wouldn't tell me that, I had to look up the FDA sheet on the drug - its INTENDED orally, not vaginally). I'm going to do one day on, one day off back and forth for a while and then go off.

The gig about progesterone is this (and this might piss off some people and if they have a beef with it - present conflicting argumentation with documentation - I'm totally open to reading it!): There's NO conclusive proof that a woman who ovulates on her own (this does NOT include FET's because then there's no corpus lutem) benefits at all from progesterone supplementation. If a pregnancy is failing, its not failing BECAUSE of progesterone lacking - that's a symptom of a failing pregnancy but taking supplemented progesterone won't SAVE a pregnancy that is going to fail. Almost all studies agree with this.  Now, for people who do FETs progest is ABSOLUTELY necessary.

So, that said, most docs/midwives don't supplement unless under 12 or so but even then, its overall agreed that its kind of a "good faith measure" but not ever going to save something that wouldn't be successful on its own.

My # was 24, far above the standard supplementation reading and only ONE below my own clinic's. I was 15dpo. I wish I would have demanded waiting and having a redraw with my following beta but I was in a daze of excitement and "okay whatever" feelings.

That's my 900 cents on the subject. :)

Re: H4M

  • Butting in because I can answer the rural area NT Scan Q. Where I live they only started offering them 6 months ago and so I didn't feel comfortable with only that short amount of time and travel 2 hours to my OB. A lot of other rural areas do not have it yet, we only do up here because they needed a new machine and so got a tech trained and bought a machine that can do 3D/4D in addition to normal u/s.

Sommer-in regards to the Progesterone my doc said the same thing. She said if it's low they will suppliment to try and help boost but that it won't save an unhealthy pregnancy. Mine was at 24 and she said that was great.

  • I would love to try a more natural setting if I ever get pregnant again, but unfortunately I doubt I will be able to. I will most likely be a high-risk vbac.

For NT scans I too have just heard about them in the last year or 2, they have posters about it at my RE's office. (He is an OB too) I was just curious as to whether it was routine or not.

Thank you so much for clarifying the progesterone thing for me. The RE really just told me that I likely was not in need of it because I never had a natural miscarriage (they thought I had one when I had an iud in when i was younger) and that he usually does not put a woman on it unless there is a concern. He also told me if I wanted to try it that it could not hurt.

I noted in the post below though that for some reason the P4 test has to be sent to our provincial lab and takes a week or 2 to come back. That makes me a bit scared that if I did get pregnant and it was low there might be a problem. Although, both you and Mnplumm stated that if a pregnancy was going to fail, progesterone would not save it.

Shall I just wait and see then? Or shall I get it tested 7dpo in my next medicated cycle so that if i don't get pregnant at least we will know for the cycle after that? What do you think?

  • Testing @ 7dpo has nothing to do with future P4 levels - it is just a test to see how strong of an O. I say go ahead and do it. And then don't draw P4 again until like 15 dpo - can't hurt!

Hoping, I just wanted to say thank you again for covering the check-in for me next week.

  • With my DS  I like you measured 24 and they put me on progesterone suppositories.  I was told they were being careful. This time at 26 no progesterone.  I ovulate on my own too. Out of curiousity is there something negative the progesterone can do?  Too late now but I like to be informed.

I have questions about this homebirth thing. :)  Just pure curiousity and absolutely no criticism from me.  I believe it to be safe as long as you have a healthy, normal risk pregnancy.

History on me first.  I read all kinds of books when pg with DD.  I was not afraid of labor and delivery at all going into it.  I have an awesome OB who is open minded and doesn't do unnecessary interventions.  I wanted to try med-free, but wasn't completely opposed to an epidural either.  I had all back labor and called the dr when contractions were 1.5 minutes apart.  Labor at home was fine.  I was relaxed, it started to hurt pretty bad, but it was still okay.  At the hospital, I had to walk myself to L&D because the valet and parking garage were full.  By the time I got to L&D, the pain was completely out of control and I wanted an epidural.  I got it at 8 cm and life was good again.  Had easy delivery and recovery.  Now, I'm thinking about this again.  We've moved and the hospital is 1 hour away.  I delivered within 4 hours of arriving with DD, so I don't feel comfortable laboring at home as long as I did before.

So, how on earth do you control that kind of pain with no drugs?  I tried the breathing, visualizing, changing positions, bathtub, etc...  It just wasn't working for me.  Is your H a good support or do you also have a doula?  Were you med-free with your DD?  Do you take any classes beforehand?  Tell me all about it.  I want to be able to control the pain, but I will be in a hospital and I think it makes it hard to relax.  At home, I had my dog and cat and Little House on a Prairie on tv. :)

It makes me horribally sick. That's all - nothing adverse from any literature.
  • I wrote this whole novel about the natural birth/homebirth thing and then my internet died and it erased it.

When I have time, I'll retype it.
  • Thanks just wondering.
