Success after IF

destination maternity can kma

so i have been dying to get some nursing bras so i can wear some clothes other than nursing tanks. i finally finagle it so i can go today and my mom can take me (can't drive b/c i am on painkillers from my surgery on tuesday).

go to destination maternity and the sales associate there has no idea on how to measure for bras. tells me i am a 44 or 46 E. pre-pregnancy i was a 36 FF, so my back grew 8-10 sizes and my boobs shrunk? i wore my regular bras all through pregnancy with an extender, and my back is back to pre-pregnancy size and i couldn't shove my boobs now into the FF cup if i tried.

so then i just am like, let me try on some bras. needless to say the 42 E i tried on did not fit, at all. the back was huge and my boobs were spilling over the cups. i am fairly certain i need a 36 or 38 H and they of course do not have any bras in that size. i am going to order online tonight i am just bummed b/c i really wanted to wear normal clothes this weekend and it was a major deal to get out just to do this.

  • That's ridiculous!!  how could they not have their staff trained to measure for bras!!  :(  I'm sorry that you had a wasted trip!!!

  • I agree with Mousey.  You'd think they'd have people able to measure!  Sorry they didn't have your size.

  • shipoopi, i know you're in north NJ... can you get to the Dain Shoppe in Morristown? They will have nursing bras that fit you.

    They're amazing there.

  • Have you met with a lactation consultant?  That's who measured me.  Well, it was actually at the little Boutique run through the hospital, but they did a great job.  I got a sleep bra and one nursing bra before I left the hospital and then I went back a few weeks later after things settled down and a second LC measured me that time.  They did great.

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience.  Boo for not having their staff properly trained in measuring for nursing bras.

  • I seriously think that most bra sizing specialists are trained by monkeys. I love when they say things like 'Oh, you can wear this size, it's the same!' No it's not!!! Sorry. I'm still in my pre-pregnancy 38F (although I could use an extender, I don't much care right now) and believe me, a 42D is not the same in the slightest.

I am going to have to order stuff from online, I know. I'm just waiting to see what happens. I have a feeling I'm going to end up in an H cup as well.

  • i have heard the dain shoppe is great but the odds of me getting there in the next week or so are slim to none. i just ordered various sizes from figleaves and bare necessities and will return whatever doesn't work.

this isn't the first time i know i have been measured wrong, and previously it happened in a high end bra shop. some woman told me i was a 44 DD and not a 38 FF i tried on a bra in the size she "knew" i was just to show her how wrong she was.

  • I had the same problem.  They actually carry a VERY limited size range.  Not a 32 band in the whole store?!  And that was after I no longer needed the 32 H that I had been wearing.

I highly recommend trying the bras on, though, if you can find another way to get out of the house.  (I know, it is really rough!)  You will wear those bras A LOT, and you want them to be comfortable!  The only places I found to try on bras (in my size) were a specialty shop attached to our hospital and Nordstrom.  I promise Nordstrom will measure you correctly.  If you have one in your area, go there.  They are awesome.

First of all, re: being measured wrong, that's ridiculous. I'm sort of glad I know already that the maternity stores don't carry my size. At 18 weeks, I'm already a 38G (36FF prepreg) and can't even imagine what I'll balloon to when my milk comes in. Fortunately, down here I have the bra and girdle warehouse about 40 minutes away in Lakewood. I went to the dain shoppe for all of my bridal stuff though and they were amazing there. If it wasn't so far away (about 1 1/2 hrs) I'd go back now.

I'm sorry you won't get out again, but getting measured IS really important. If you can't get to the dain shoppe, at least going to nordstrom to get properly measured would help so much. Or maybe your mom can pick up a measure and you can read online how to do it yourself. It would be better than guessing.

    thinking of you.
