Anyone from or been to South Carolina recently?

We live in PA, and are looking into taking a lil getaway in sept/oct to SC (sans kids). Just looking for a few days of relaxing, some sightseeing. We were thinking about maybe Charleston or Hilton Head. Any reccs or other nice places to see or stay? Looking for an affordable 4day/3nights. Thanks girls!

Re: Anyone from or been to South Carolina recently?

  • Not sure your interested in this but I'll throw it out there.  I went to Charleston last year...we found a place on vrbo.com out at Folly Beach.  It was really nice but man that place is hot in the summer!  We did a week though, but maybe you could find somewhere that does shorter term.  I super puffy heard staying at vrbo w/ kids!  We have always had a good experience w/ it.
  • We went to Hilton Head at the end of April and had so much fun.  I love HH.  Sept/Oct is a nice time to go there - there are lots of bike trails and stuff like that, plus the beach is gorgeous.

I would check into rentals on vrbo.com - that might be out of high season and you might find a deal.  My uncle owns a house that he lists on vrbo, but it's 3BR/3BA so I'm sure you could find a cheaper option for just two people, otherwise I would suggest it because I really liked the location.

I prefer staying in Sea Pines when we go to HH - there are other areas, but that's my favorite.

  • I live in SC, and I feel that I need to give you a warning: even in September and October, it can be HORRIBLY hot here. It's also still hurricane season but that shouldn't keep you away, so its just an FYI.

I love Hilton Head. We have friends there (Muffin's godparents) and DH is going to Bluffton this weekend to see his best buddy. (Bluffton is just across the bridge from HHI; you drive through Bluffton to get to HHI.) I'm sorry that I can't really reccomend a place to stay but I can tell you some good restaurants. CQ's is great and so is Old Fort Pub.

As for Charleston, I love that, too. I'd stay downtown, maybe Indigo Inn or the Mills House or Planters Inn. As for restaurants, my stepdaughter lives there and says Bocci (Italian) is good. I've also heard Oak Steakhouse is good; and DH and I like Fleet Landing (seafood); Hyman's (seafood) is good but touristy so be prepared to wait. We had dessert one night at Kaminsky's and the Toll House pie was worth every single calory.

    Hope this helps

  • I grew up on Folly Beach in the summer.  My parents now have a house on the river by Kiawah.  If you want the "resort experence" but also want to do tourist/historic stuff, I would got to Kiawah (or if you want to be closer to town, Isle of Palms, but it isn't as resort like.  If you just want to lay on a beach/play golf, I would do Hilton head.  I am going with the kids for 2 weeks in August, while DH does another trip.  Kiawah has a great beach, really nice bike trails and things, but it is kind of quiet.  If you want to do something more exciting, I would stay in downtown Charleston and just go out to the beach for the day, but I have about a 2 hour lay on the beach ability.

  • We just got back from a week there with kids on Saturday (Hilton Head).  It was a nice family vacation.  We stayed in a condo rental for the week which was great - right near South Forest Beach.  The beach was very nice...we liked the condo, but they only rent for a week.  There was a Holiday Inn right on the beach near where we were.  I am sure there were other hotels, but there were tons of condos...not sure if any of those rent for less than a week.  THere was a Marriott property (condo) right on the beach...maybe they do less than a week..may be worth checking.

As far as things to do - we took a day trip to Savannah (only 45 min drive or so). It was very nice.  There are a lot of dolphin cruises and fishing cruises.  Fireworks are at Shelter Cove on Tuesday nights....very crowded. For a good margarita and very casual food....try the Frosty Frog at Coligny Plaza.  It was a fun tiki type bar....very casual, but good frozen drinks.  For a good dinner, Red Fish was very good in Palmetto Dunes.  Harbortown was fun with some cute shops/restaurants.
