How do you keep nap time going!?

Seriously, I'm desperate and need help!  He's only a year and a half and he's starting only taking one nap for an hour....he dropped the second nap a long time ago but would at least take a 3 hour nap now the past few weeks it's been an hour at the most...I seriously can't handle it... Now I'm trying to put him back down for a second nap but he just screams the whole time....

Any ideas!?

Re: How do you keep nap time going!?

  • The reason this is so hard is because he's up from his nap by 2 pm and then he doesn't go to bed until 9...my husband works late and this is the only way for him to see him...so he used to wake up at 9 but is now waking up at 7:30 on top of only taking an hour nap! And I'm pregnant!

  • is he crying when he wakes up?  DD used to take 3 30 minute naps throughout the day and would wake up crying after each one.  i dropped her 2nd nap, bumped her first nap back about 30 minutes and kept on putting her down for her 3rd nap.  she would continue to wake shortly after falling asleep (leading me to believe that she was still tired), but i let her CIO and get herself back to sleep - she eventually started taking longer naps.

these days she goes down at 10AM and 2PM - regardless of what time she wakes up, i leave her in her crib until 11AM and 4PM.  she no longer cries when she wakes up, so i think she knows that i will come get her when her nap times are over.  as long as she has her paci and lovey, she's quite happy in her crib just rolling around, babbling to herself.....

  • Hate to say it, but maybe you should consider putting him to bed earlier --maybe he is overtired and the lack of nighttime sleep is affecting his quality of naptime sleep?

  • Well the problem is, he never used to cry at all, he would just go right down and I have a video monitor so every now and then he would sit up but go right back down...now I see him standing up the entire time, so I know if he isn't even sitting down, he's not going to go down...I live overseas so it's later here... so anyway he's been crying now for almost 25 minutes and I know he won't stop...what do I do!?!?!  I am seriously losing my mind...it was hard enough getting 2-3 hour naps but 1 hour is just not acceptable but at the same time I can't just let him scream for an hour!?
  • If I really thought that was the issue I would but we've lived here for a year and his bedtime has been 9 pm and he'd sometimes even sleep until 10...up until the past few weeks and now he's getting up really early...originally every time he woke up he'd have dirty diapers, every single time but the past few days he hasn't so I'm almost wondering if for some reason that started it and now he's just waking up because he got used to it..?
  • I know I always say this when I see posts like this is ....could he be teething?? My DS just went through this and he was getting all 4 molars. Since they have cut he is back to napping well and going down at bedtime awake without crying.

It could also be an ear infection

  • I get that you want him to sleep more, but does he actually need more sleep?  An hour might not be enough for you, but enough for him.  Is he acting tired the rest of the day?
