Sleep help - advice please

My 2.5 yr old is not sleeping through the night.  He will wake up at least 3 times, crying and trying to get out of his room.  We go in and lay him back down, cover him up and sometimes he goes back to sleep and sometimes he cries.  We have let him just cry some nights but it doesn't seem to be helping.  And around 3-4am we just let him sleep in our bed so we can at least get some sleep (which I know is not the best idea but I am dying for sleep, and so is he since he is super crabby due to lack of sleep).

Any advice on getting a toddler to stay in bed and sleep through the night?

rewards?  IDK though.  At that age my son slept with us full time.  He doesn't anymore though!  He just grew out of it.
