3 hour glucose test

i just found out i had abnormal results for my 1 hour test.  Has anyone had to do the 3 hour? What does it entail and does that necessarily mean you have GD? I got the message after hours so I couldnt call my dr with my questions...and since we're all experts on here :)...

Im 28 weeks and the dr said i was measuring really big, so I have to come back in 2 weeks for an ultrasound to check fluids...I read that that might be a symptom of GD.  Im just curious if you have it, what all do you have to do from then on...TIA!

Re: 3 hour glucose test

  • I've heard a lot of people fail the 1 hour test and then pass the 3 hour one.  I'm one of them.  Good luck! :)
  • Failed the 1 hour, passed the 3 hour.  You drink the same stuff as the one hour, but then just sit there for 3 hours and they take your blood every hour... the only part that sucks is that by the end, it takes longer to get enough blood since you're not allowed to drink anything in between and you'll have 4 pricks in your arms.

  • I failed the 1 hour and passed the 3 hour.  It doesn't mean you have GD if you fail the one...I think they treat you for it if you fail the 3 hour.  It involves fasting for like 12 hours before and then sitting for 3 hours in a hospital (or wherever you have to do it) and getting your blood taken once every hour for 3 hours, after drinking that orange soda stuff.  I thought the not eating was torture...but otherwise, no biggie!  Good luck!

  • For the 3 hour test you go in the draw your blood right away to get your control number then you drink the drink with in the mins allowed. Then they draw your blood 3 more times on every hour. It's not bad bring a book. And I was allow to drink water after my first draw. GD could be bad bit it is so manageable. I check mh sugar 4 times a day once in the morning and 2 hours after breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I watch everything I ate you can only have so many cranes per meal or snack. I was able to control my sugar just by my eating but if eating with in the allow carbs does not keep your sugar down you may have to take some type of meds. It not the worst think to happen. Also I never measured big and I only had a 5 lb baby.
  • I'm another one who failed the 1 hour but passed the 3 hour. It really wasn't that bad. I just left the test reallllllly hungry since I couldn't eat.
  • I failed the 1 hour buy just 1 point and then failed the 3 hour by quite a bit.  At first I was freaked out about the GD.  But luckily mine was very easily controlled by diet and DD was born at a normal birth weight (6lbs 1oz at 38 weeks 1 day).  Anyway the 3 hour test isn't as bad as it is made out to be, the worst part is getting the drink down.  I recommend bringing a piece of sugar free gum and sneaking a few chews after you drink the crap because it tasted so horrible.  Anyway you just have to fast after midnight, have your blood drawn when you first get their, drink the drink which contains 100 grams of sugar, then have your blood drawn once every hour for 3 hours.  Bring a book or something to do and you'll be fine.
  • I had GD with my 1st pregnancy and I really don't hope I get it this time around.  A lot of people who fail the 1 hour pass the 3 hour with no problem so try not to worry about it.  I had to actually take the 3 hour test twice because the 1st time it made me so sick that I threw up all over the lab and once you vomit the test is over because the results won't be acurate.  You drink the same drink you had for the one hour only this time they draw your blood 4 times over a 3 hour period.  Bring a book or a dvd player to help kill the time.  Good luck!
