Ugh, cough lasting weeks, but just occasionally?

We had a cold that went around, starting about a month ago. We're all over it, in general, but one of us is coughing about every night, all night. It turns out just about every person that attended my brother's wedding had it at some point--and everyone I've talked to is saying the same thing. E's having trouble going to sleep--I tried mucinex cough for kids, but it's not working. It's just that dry, persistent cough. Is there anything that works? We've tried the usual remedies, and nothing's working long enough to help him go to sleep.

  • I had this myself just a couple of weeks ago.  I went back to the doc for a second time and she told me to use my asthma inhaler since my tubes were inflamed.  It actually worked like a charm after just a couple days.

  • hmmmm...we have a nebulizer, but no current meds. Maybe I should call the doctor and get an RX for albuterol.

When the cough is interefering with sleep, I always go into the pedi. My Emilia has recurring respiratory probs, and needs xopenex (albuterol turns her into a wild animal) to clear it up. Unfortch, she never seems to 'get over' a cold without intervention.

    Hope he feels better!

  • Yeah it was such an annoying dry cough.  They even did a chest x-ray to rule out pneumonia which was negative.  That inhaler was such a relief!

  • I know it's not pneumonia, because they're not even coughing on a daily basis. He finally quit coughing and went to sleep.
  • DD is going through this right now... I just went back on my FB and saw that her fever/cold started on June 12th. She's still coughing every night and a bit throughout the day... it's been almost a month! We've tried vapor baths, vaporub, Hyland's homeopathic cough medicine, allergy medicine (in case it was allergy-related), Benadryl (as a cough suppressant--it's in Triaminic's nighttime cough strips)... Nothing is really working. And when she doesn't sleep, WE don't sleep...

I plan on taking her to the ped on Saturday if it's still going... I get worried!
