Anyone use CARES (Child Aviation Restraint System)?

Does anyone have any pros or cons about them?

We are planning a trip to Disney with our DS and we alreay know there is NO way he would sit on our laps for the entire (or even part) of the flight and I dread taking the car seat for just the flight (in Disney, we'll use their transportation).

Any feedback/suggestions greatly appreciated!  TIA!

  • We use it, but I wouldn't much like it for a child under 18 months. Since airplane seats don't recline much, it just seems really awkward to me for little ones. I love it for my 3 year old, though. We still bring a carseat for my youngest.

  • We used it yesterday and absolutely loved it!  We had 3 flights in 7 days.  On the first flight DD sat in her carseat (or started out in it I should say).  It was awful...her feet were at the perfect position to kick the crap out of the seat in front of her.  We ended up having to take her out and hold her for the 3 hour flight.  We didn't have a seat for her on the second flight as it was only a 45 minute trip.  On the way home yesterday we gate checked the carseat and used the CARES harness that we had borrowed.  It was great.  She sat in her seat the entire 3 hours and watched Elmo on DVD.  My DD is very small, only 19 pounds and 30 inches, and the only problem we had was that she kind of slid down in her seat, but we just kept sitting her back up, it really wasn't a big deal.  The carseat is a complete pain to lug with if you don't need it at your destination (we did).  HTH!

  • If your child is willing to sit quietly and not try to scoot down in the seat, then I would use it.  We tried it last weekend and will likely be waiting another couple of months before using it again.
