My MIL offered to do one and I asked her if instead we could do a gathering after the baby is born that way people could come over and see LO. We do not need anything else and I know people will want to see him/her anyways so it helps me out too. Besides for the second one I don't feel it is necessary, especially since they are so close in age. It seems more selfish.
My cousin/BFF threw me a 'sprinkle' a couple of weeks ago. It was just a small family cookout with good food, cupcakes, and some gifts. Gifts were small and useful like: diapers, wipes, a new changing pad, a few clothes, new nipples & drop-in liners, etc....It was perfect

I specifically asked not to have one because we were having another girl and we had everything we needed already. But my SIL surprised me with a baby shower with a diaper theme. So everyone bought us diapers and wipes which helps out a ton since they're so expensive.
I didn't, but a friend of mine hosted an all-girls spa day in honor of the mom-to-be a few weeks before the baby was due. We went to the spa (everyone chose and paid for their own treatment), then out to lunch where we gave a few little gifts.
I'm not pregnant yet but we're TTGP & my best friend and i always told each other that we'd throw a small sprinkle if we got pregnant with a second child. i don't feel like showers are just presents based. i feel it's a celebration of life and pregnancy. if i get a gift, hey, thanks, but it's not necessary!
I'm on number three and have had been thrown several surprise showers by family, friends, and coworkers. I helped with the first shower. The second one - my mom through me a sprinkle as well as my boss, For the third one, my new boss threw me a sprinkle, I asked her to keep it very small -- like five people and my friends/mom group threw me one as well. I have everything from my first born. It was nice to be showered with love for all three children. I think each child shoud be celebrated. It doesn't have to be extravagent - I've always loved the idea of hosting a brunch ladies only shower.
I've heard of people doing a "Sip and See" where after the baby is born family and friends come to meet the little one and you offer them some appetizers and drinks.
