DH and I are planning to TTC soon. If we have a boy, he'll be "Harold J---- ----- IV". I am wondering what to call this kid - since FIL is Harold and DH is Harry.... Any suggestions for a nickname?
My dad's name is Harold..I call him Hal all the time...I call him that instead of "Dad." But then again he's my dad..I don't think anyone else calls him that.
I know for a fact no one calls him Harry. I'd laugh my arse off to their faces if I heard them say that.
My grandpa's name was Harold, we called him Grandpa Hud. I don't know if that was becuase of the Harold or becuase our our last name that sounds like Hudson?
This is one family naming trend I wouldn't perpetuate--Harold, really? All I see is Old and Hairy. It's not good.
Yeah. It has seriously hurt my dad. I mean he suffers...
Once he got out of about 3rd grade...but then again--it looks like some people never manage to grow up.
I'm not talking about kids making fun of him; I'm actually of the opinion that most kids don't make fun of other kids' names these days--there are too many unusual names to make it fun. I simply don't like the name Harold. It's not a personal affront to your father (or to the OP), I simply would never consider the name, family tradition or not.
To the OP: If you're determined to use the name, Hank and Hal were both decent suggestions. Still not my style, but . . . he is your baby.
Harry or Hal could work, but you could also call him by his middle name... I know a lot of Juniors and Thirds that go by their middle name or a nick name of their middle name.

Harold is not a name I would pick out of the air if there was no history behind it, but it is important to DH to continue the tradition. Besides, we've already agreed that this gives me 99.9% of the say in what we name Girl #1, or Boy #2!
Re: Nicknames for "Harold"
Junior or JR?
Rollie? lol
Not sure. Sorry.
Harry is the first nn suggested for Harold, so honestly - I would just use Harold.
Hal?

That's not bad, actually.

Some fourths go by "Chip" or "Quad" or even "IV" (although the last one seems pretty feminine for a boy imho).
You could also use "Ollie."
We call the only Harold I know "Hal"
I don't know if you have ever seen Harold and Kumar, but Kumar always called Harold, Roldy.
