Multiples

I can't get them on the same schedule.

Which means that they NEVER nap at the same time. I literally have 1/2 hour  to myself if I'm lucky. How can I get them on the same schedule? I've even tried driving around so they both sleep, but it always goes right back to opposite. It's like they pass a torch - the second one wakes up the other goes to sleep.

Re: I can't get them on the same schedule.

  • I would make them.  Well as much as you can.  Just keep trying.  Mine didn't get on a really good consistent nap schedule until 6 months, but they always napped at the same time.  I put them down together.  I might have to go resituate one a few times but it was worth it.  They are now good nappers and nap at the same time.  Afternoon naps are always at the same time as my daughter's as well so I usually have atleast an hour and a half of quiet time in the afternoon - sometimes 2 or 2 and a half.  Daycares do it w/ tons of kids - they just make them.  They'll learn it's nap time.

when we started ST it was at about 5mos gest age, and we did naps and night at the same time.  i was going out of my mind with them never napping at the same time.  also, they took SHORT naps.  audrey was queen of the 11min nap.

i'd been doing pre-nap routine, and soothing for 10min+ per baby.  by the time i got them both down, one (audrey) was awake 5min later.

i was apprehensive about letting her CIO.  dh had to start.  one day i came home from work, and he'd let her CIO for her 3rd nap.  she cried for 45min  Sad but then slept for over 45min!  it was a big turning point for us.  she started napping longer and became a much much happier baby almost immediately.  it was only at this point that i started to have a successful schedule.

OP - I'm having the same exact problem, so I feel your pain!

Jinjag - My Audrey is also the queen of short naps! Lol

  • I started really sleep training when the boyse were 4 months, and made them have the same schedule. It was really important to me that they did everything at the same time. {Funny, now htey even have poopy diapers at the same time}

I started their day at the same time, and followed this chart for awake time by age to a "T"

Guideline for Awake time for babies
    Newborn 50-60 mins
    1 month 60 mins-hour and 15
    2 months 1 hour and 15 - 20 mins
    3 months 1 hour and 20 - 30 mins
    4 months 1 hour and 45 - 2 hours
    5 months 2 hours - 2.25 hours
    Late 5 months/early 6 months 2.25-2.5 hours
6.5 - 7 months 2.75-3 hours. Some are getting more.
    8 - 10 months 3 - 4 hours. Some are getting more.
11 - 12 months 3.5 -4.5 hours. Some are getting more if moved early to 1 nap

So at 5 months, they would wake a 6:30, and would be back in their cribs by 8:30. When I first started, I would turn on the sound machine and rock, swing, shush, bounce, till they were drowsy. I would put them down, and let them fuss it out in their cribs. I really found that doing it at the right time helped them to sleep more and easier.

When one woke from nap, I would wake them both and restart the clock for 2 hours. Them back in the cribs.

By 6 months, they were really predictable and I could assign set times for naps.

This sounds AWESOME! But I have another kid, so I can't leave her alone and do this. Sh-t! How am I ever going to accomplish this?  I think I wil lstart with this time period, but do it in the swings for now and see if it works.
