Potty Training

3 Day PT and Daycare

So we did the 3day PT this weekend with great success.  I dropped DS off at DC this morning, told them all the stuff and just looked at the webcam.  He's been there an hour and is already in new shorts, ugh!  I feel horrible for him.  Of course I am not sure what happened, but I am so upset (must be the hormones).  Anyone have issues with starting back at daycare after the 3day PT method?

Re: 3 Day PT and Daycare

  • What's "all the stuff" you told them?  And how does daycare generally handle PT?  Was your son telling you when he had to pee, or where you just reminding/taking him every so often?  Has he used the potty at daycare before?

DS actually trained at daycare first, and then we trained at home.  We didn't do the 3 day method, but from what I've read, it's not much different than regular ol' common sense PT.  But maybe it's just being in a different surrounding and getting used to going in a new place.  I think that's the tough part about the 3 day method, after the 3 days you have to move out into the real world and it's an adjustment.

  • We told them what his cues where and when they saw them to just remind him to tell them when he has to go potty, not to ask if he has to go potty.  Also to remind him to keep his underwear dry.  I realize they have multiple kids to watch and it's not one-on-one attention like it is at home, but I just looked again and he's in another new pair.  He did soooo well at home and I know it's an adjustment being back at daycare with all the excitement, etc.
  • It's just going to take awhile.  They're probably not going to be able to watch him like you could for his cues, so it's going to be his responsibility to tell them when he needs to go.  Do they normally take the kids potty on a schedule anyway?  At our center they take them every hour.  They should probably be doing that until he gets the hang of it, which might take awhile.  He's so preoccupied with everything else going on and I really doubt they're reminding him as often as you did at home.  And even if he does sense the urge, he probably doesn't want to stop what he's doing.  He'll get it, you just might be doing alot of laundry at first :)

Yes.  We did the weekend PTing with DD and the first day back at daycare, she had a full day of accidents.  Literally 4 changes of clothes at least!  But the next day?  Not a single one.  I think the kids have to get used to the concept in a new surrounding, particularly one full of distractions.  So don't worry -- he'll likely have a ton of accidents today and it will really taper off after that. After the first 2 days, DD did have an occasional accident but nothing like the first day back after PTing.
