do they even exist?? DH is adamant on getting toys for LO that are not made in China (especially those that she would end up sucking) but I think that will be very hard! almost all the toys we've seen in the store are made in China :-/.
this is something I struggle with - we personally only buy eco friendly, wooden type toys from the local toy store for the most part, but who buy him gifts do not (even my parents who are otherwise eco-friendly/buy local themselves and usually right on board with all parenting decisions we make) so we don't limit those things and don't feel bad that he does have some (well, lots) of plastic-y MIC toys too.
I like Haba toys and have looked at the website mei shared.
Interstingly enough some of Jack's favorite toys are the natural ones we picked out - Kathe Kruse (Germany) rainbow baby (small baby tied on a wooden ring), all the Vulli toys - Sophie le Giraffe and the Gnon figures - they make a chilling teething toy too that he likes. He also has some haba and under the nile toys.
You live in a pretty big metro area, you should ask (or google) around to see if there are any fun, independent toy or baby shops, they often have unique, fun stuff. Although you can probably find the same stuff online for a little cheaper, we just like to browse and support the independent toy store so the 1-2$ doesn't really bother us, because we look forward to taking Jack there as he gets older.
I was looking for the same thing and stumbled upon this company on Amazon the other day because their Uncle Goose alphabet blocks got stellar ratings on Amazon.

if you are interested in HABA toys there are a few still available in the babysteals archive...not sure if it is cheaper than amazon (sometimes it's not w/amazon free shipping) but it's worth a look

I looked at the Haba toys and it says "designed in Germany, made in China"!!! ugh!!
IMHO..... There are too many things to worry about re babies. This is one that I have chosen not to dwell on. You can buy handmade toys on Etsy. I believe Sophie the Giraffe is from France? But babies get SO MANY toys as gifts. Will you return or trash them all? Again, just my 2 cents. :-)

I agree. i am more lenient about this. DH is the one who is bent on trying not to buy any toys made in China. ugh.
yeah, i was actually looking at stuff on Etsy earlier. yes, Sophie is made in France which is the only toy we saw on BBB that is NOT made in China lol.
Before Libby was born my plan was to avoid all plastic toys and things that lit up, etc. Well, then my mom went nuts and bought so many Fisher-Price things it was ridiculous! But Libby loves them! So, I checked them all out on www.healthytoys.org and www.healthystuff.org and if they passed the test, we kept them.
She LOVES her Baby Einstein toys (a piano and a little "iPod") as well as some other things that light up and make music (like her FP Jumperoo). I do give her wooden and fabric things too (that are "natural") as well as board and fabric books, a few stuffed animals (a couple are organic) and her favorite Sophie the Giraffe. So we strike a balance and as long as they're safe I am okay with it. I do want her to experience more than just plastic electronic toys, but they have their place and honestly? She loves them. But she loves her more "simple" and natural toys too. So everything in moderation....
