tv shows for an almost 2 year old

So we are finally giving introducing DD#1 to tv.  She will be 2 next month.  She loves Dora and Diego and Sesame Street as characters in books, etc.  I imagine we'll watch those shows at some point, but I was wondering what the best educational shows are and what channel they are on.  I am totally clueless.  TIA.

Re: tv shows for an almost 2 year old

  • DD only watches Sesame Street, so I don't have much to compare it to, but she LOVES it, and we do as well.  It is very educational and she loves to dance along to the songs.  She has several Sesame Street books that she also enjoys reading and looking through, and she has made the connection between the books and the show.  We watch it On Demand and also have a couple of DVDs.

FWIW, she loses interest when the cartoon segments come on, so I can't see her enjoying other cartoons (which is fine with me; I don't want her to get into more than just SS for now).

  • We aren't allowing TV quite yet, but I've heard other moms talk about Sprout TV, which is on PBS.  But I haven't watched it, so I can't attest to the educational value.

  • At that age DD loved and still loves Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Handy Manny on Disney Channel, and of course Dora.  She also watches some of the shows on Sprout.

  • I'm not trying to be snarky at all, but I'm curious as to why you're going to introduce tv at all?
  • DD likes Sesame Street and Yo Gabba Gabba.

  • Maggie loved Mickey Mouse Clubhouse as well and Molly really likes the Wiggles.  Both have a lot of songs which the younger kids really seem to love the most about TV.  Both of mine also lose interest during just the cartoon segments but tend to be more about the singing.  For MMCH we always dance around to the beginning and ending songs and they really look forward to that.  For Maggie now we can talk about the colors, shapes, numbers etc that they are talking about in the episodes to help it be more interactive.
  • I think PBS has the most educational shows- there is some good information at their site about content and schedules.

yeah, if you've made it this long, keep going;) that being said, our DS has been watching TV forever, thanks to my DH and his TV addiction. His favorite, absolute favorite show, is Caillou. He likes Sesame Street, The Wiggles, and Barney...he will sort of watch any show on PBS Sprout, but those shows he really gets into, dancing, pointing, talking, etc. I've been trying to limit his TV and get him back to reading books, happily its working, a lot of times now he doesn't even ask for the TV or bother with it at all.

  • We watch the Nick Jr. channel almost exclusively.  It used to be called Noggin.  Faves in our house are Blues Clues, Yo Gabba Gabba, Wow Wow Wubzy, Max and Ruby, Dora, Jacks Big Music Show and Wonder Pets.  Really anything on that channel except the "live" shows with real people (like Fresh Beat Band).  My DD #1 is not really a fan of actual people jumping around acting dorky.  Best part of that channel: zero commercials.
