Diaper blow-outs - need suggestions!

My 6 day old is already getting diaper blow outs. GRR!

The hospital had us using pampers (im assuming not drymax)... which worked PERFECTLY! Once we ran out of those I only had 1 box of NB Huggies... all my other diapers start at size 1.

He was born 7Ibs 13 oz ... so I'm assuming size 1 would definitely be too big. The NB huggies blew out on me so I went to Walmart to buy pampers (not dry max) but they were out... so I bought Luvs... and I've been having blow outs again...

What are yalls suggestions? I think I might try target brand next... but what are your suggestions on the sizes?

I've been bfing & supplementing formula... I can tell he has gained some weight but I have no idea how much!?

TIA!

  • Do you have the ruffles around the legs pulled out?  Sounds stupid but there are two sets of elastic ruffles, one that should be pulled out around the legs and one that stays in to keep the poops in.  My LO was 9lbs, 8oz at birth and after one blow out up the back of the newborn diaper in the hospital, we switched him to 1's and he has stayed in them with no problem.  ALso, make sure the tabs are snug across the front.....too loose could mean too much room for escaping poop if he wiggles.  Change often too---I've learned if they are too full of pee, it is easier for the poop to escape.

  • i'm not well versed in disposables.  we use cloth and have never had a blowout.  my guess is you're not going to make the switch just based on my recommendation, but hey...  it's worth a shot!  we just had what surely would have been a MAJOR blowout today...  but it was all contained in the cover.  thank goodness, because it squeezed all over the place inside that cover!
  • Luvs are EXACTLY the same as Baby Dry.  They don't even try and hide it.  We went from Swaddlers to Baby Dry without a problem.  Maybe put them on higher/tighter.  We can't wear Huggies or we have a blowout every time so maybe switch brands?  LOs change proportions a lot right after birth.
  • cloth = no blowouts so far for us.

  • I would try the size 1's.  Since you have some, put one on him and see if you think it's too big.  My girls never were at the minimum weight limit of a diaper size before they were in it.  Depends on their build and how you like a diaper to fit.  FWIW, my daughter has been fine in Drymax.  With Baby Dry, she's had multiple leaks but never did with Swaddlers.  I'm going back to Swaddlers when I'm finished with this pack.
  • We tried Luvs and Huggies NB, but they are too big and we had plenty of messes.  No problems with Swaddlers NB.. we are saving the rest of the Huggies and Luvs till she grows a little more.. then transition to a size 1. Good luck in the diaper hunt!
  • We had major blow out issues for the first month when we used disposables. Since we switched to cloth, not one single blow out. As PP have said, I'm not sure you are looking to switch but it's worth considering. We use bumGenius 3.0

That said, the Pampers Swaddlers gave us the LEAST amount of issues (not the DryMax). Also, I noticed the same thing, when I didn't fluff out those little elastic ruffles, it was more likely to blow.

Good luck! Nothing worse than cleaning up that mess all over everything!
