I am shocked *I* survived camping...

Gah, I did it. I survived camping with the dudes, in the mountains, for 4 days in tents. I am dirty (even after 2 showers at home) and tired as all hell. I only cried once :o) and proclaimed that I'm NEVAH camping again.

I'm just not cut out for this ***. I'm woman enough to say it.

  • wimp!!!!!!!!!!! lol

When I was in highschool I went on a primative canoe trip...we stop at whatever island we found....dug out a "bathroom", buried it when we left the next morning.  No showers other a quick dip in the river with a bar of soap.  No electricity or running water.  It was fun BUT there's no way in hell I would do it now in my old age.

We still camp...done tent camping at campsites with power & running water and awesome bathroom facilities.  Thats not bad at all.

DOOOODE. I can hang if it's just me and the H but the dudes complicate it. I'm a hiker- done it all but sans babies.

  • Well, as I posted below:

I've camped exactly once in my life, and it sucked.  Never again.  I was 10, btw.

  • I agree camping with little kids suck but I've done so many times that its kinda like 2nd nature.  I can only do it for like an extended weekend though.

  • I just don't get it so I've gotta ask all the camping haters: what exactly is it that makes the experience so miserable for you? Sleeping on an air mattress? Lack of bathroom facilities and room service, LOL?

  • lack of power & flushing toilets and the fact that I LOVE my own bed too much!

I dont hate it...but if I had a choice between staying home or going camping...I'm gonna stay home.

  • Cleo- it's not that I hate it, I just don't enjoy it with the boys. THEY are MH, not me. I told them they could poop in the portajohn or dig a whole- Owen said he'd hold it :o)

What I hate is the packing and unpacking. Actually camping is ok but I'd much rather the beach on the Cape.

  • Cleo, I am so un-outdoorsy it's pitiful.  I also have a serious aversion to dirt.  I won't get in the lake because I'm afraid of touching a) dirt or b) fish.  (Same goes for snorkeling.)

  • I can make a list, Cleo!

1 - I do not like to be outside unless I am laying by a pool or on the beach.  I do not enjoy outdoor activities as I do not like to sweat or get hot.  I hate feeling gross unless I am sweating by a pool worshiping the sun god, in which case, I can then get in the pool and cool off and go back to my book or magazine.  Plus, I can leave the pool/beach and go to the AC.

2 - I do not like not having my own bathroom w/ electricity.  This is due to my skincare, makeup and hair routine, as well as liking to have running water nearby for my toilet and shower activities.

    3 - bugs

4 - food, besides s'mores which are divine

5 - I do not enjoy activities associated with camping: fishing, hiking, etc.

6 - dirt, snakes and other things that live in the outdoors

Truly I'm not sure I could come up with anything I would hate more than camping.

  • You sound just like my DH.  Only he cried more than once last time we went tent camping.  Hehe just kidding...kinda ;)

  • You're a much better woman than I.  Nature freaks me the F out.  I have camped twice in my life and that was two times too many!  I dread the kids getting old enough to want to camp with girl scouts because I'm afraid someone might expect me to go.  Both times I went I spent the entire night way too scared to sleep because of all the nature sounds.  Add to that the lack of electricity and lack of bathrooms and I can't imagine how anyone could like it!

Like eclaires, nature for me had better involve swimming and a frozen drink or it's just not worth it.

  • Where in the heck do you people camp that has no running water or flush toilets?  I guess if you are REALLY roughing it (like a state forest it might be like that).  Our campgrounds (state) have bath houses with flush toilets and showers that are completely enclosed with locks on the doors.  Every couple of campsites there is a spigot with running water.  It is cold...but you don't have to pump it by hand like you do at the state forests.  We have camped in a tent camper and tents for years.  I never did growing up and only started after I got married.  I like everything about it except washing dishes after a meal.  We take a screen tent so the picnic table is in it and there is always room for another table to do food prep, etc.  So...no bugs.  We always have a campsite right on the beach so rarely any flies or mosquitoes because there is always a breeze.  We even camped one time (tent) and it was so cold we put rocks by the fire so we could wrap them in newspaper and put at the bottom of our sleeping bags to keep us toasty warm all night.  We just turn the tiny furnance in the camper on now...just in the early mornings though.
  • There are so.many.things to hate about camping!!  Bugs, dirt, no water, and all the CRAP necessary to be comfortable (ie. we don't own a tent, camper, grill, sleeping bags, or whatever else it takes....and I think I'd need every single convenience item possible to be happy!).  I guess maybe if we were invited to go with people that already owned all this kind of stuff, and we had the setup someone mentioned above - campsite near potties/showers/water, tents for the tables, air mattress, maybe I could surive 1-2 nights.  Maybe.  But then also, what do you DO all day after you wake up, other than spend the whole day working to survive...ie. preparing and cleaning up meals, digging holes for poop, rolling up your sleeping bag, whatever?  Fish?  Boring.
