Baby Names

Olive

Hello, baby naming friends. :)

I'm throwing this one on here for a friend. She is thinking of naming her DD Olivia, after her grandmother. Her grandmother's actual name is Olive. I like Olive, and I haven't heard it in ages. She is considering it as an alternative to the wildly popular Olivia.

What say the baby naming board?

I've probably been on The Bump longer than you have.

  • I think it's cute.
  • I think Olive is cute.

Makes me think of the little girl in Little Miss Sunshine (I love that movie, so I mean that in a good way).

  • I know it is a legit name, but i have a hard time with it...makesme want to say pickle, relish etc
  • I love it.  It was on my short, short list for a girl but DH nixed it.
  • I love Olive. There are a few of them across these boards. Olive Oyl isn't really a thought if you are under about 25, Popeye isn't that popular anymore.
  • I love Olive. I think it's very classy. I have an Aunt Olive who was very classy indeed!

  • i like it [and definitely much more than olivia] but she might not like that it's a celebrity baby name. if that's not an issue, i definitely say go with olive. it's such a pretty name and not as trendy as the alternative.

  • I don't like it. I think people will bash it . . . it's along the same line as G. Paltrow naming her kid Apple.

I met a little girl named Olive a few weeks ago, it was definitely different, but I am still a fan of Olivia even though it is SUPER popular.

  • I like Olive a lot. Kristen Chenoweth played a really cute character named Olive in Pushing Daisies. I don't really think of Olive Oyl when I hear it at all.

I know about 500 Olivias, so I think Olive is a nice alternative.

  • Hate it, way too old lady and not very feminine IMO.

    I totally agree with this!!!

  • If she's looking to honor the grandmother, then I think she should name the kid Olive. I prefer it over Olivia.

I also think it's worth asking if little kids these days even watch Popeye.

  • I like it!

  • Thanks for the feedback, everyone! My friend can't believe how quickly the bump provided opinions.

    Cheers!

  • I'm sorry, I love different/unique names... but I'm really not a fan of this one. Maybe as a middle name?
  • I don't like it.  To me, it's a condiment.

  • It's my mom's middle name. I can tell you right now the Bump would go apeballs over her first name.
  • Eh. I prefer Olivia. Or Liv. I don't care for Olive as a baby's name.
  • I think it's kinda of cute, and would prefer it to the ultra-popular Olivia! :)

  • I think it's very cute, and the tie to her grandmother is even better. I love family names. My son's middle name is my DH's middle name, and our daughter's middle name is my middle name. It's a great tribute to her and so cute.

Though it'd be really funny if she grew up liking martini's!

  • It is my grandmothers middle name and I considered it for a middle name for DD.  Unfortunately, she (my grandma) HATES the name and forbid me from using it.  haha.  So.....  Take that for what it's worth!

I personally think it is cute.  I didn't love it enough to use for a first name, but thought of it as a solid family middle name.

  • i'd like it as a middle name
  • I LOVE LOVE LOVE this name, but my DH vetoed it.  There is a super cute little girl in our library group named this- tell her to go for it!!

Ha ha ha- now I'm curious- what's your mom's name????

  • I love it, and I agree - it's a nice alternative to Olivia. I actually think it will pick up in a few years because of that., but it's still in the 500s which means you wont meet many Olives. Plus, you get the added bonus of "olive you" :)

    And it was Olive Oyl.

    ETA: anagram = I love
