Parenting after a Loss

My car and $$ is really stressing me out.

So I will start by saying that my car is a lemon.  We have replaced everything big in the car in the past 4 years that I've owned it:  transmission, drive shaft, heater core, AC, exhaust, and the list goes on and on.  Well, my car just failed it's inspection because of a crack in the exhaust so we had to pay $1200 to get it replaced.  On top of that over the past 2 weeks it has been revving on it's own when I'm going down a highway.  So, I'm driving at a consistent speed and all the sudden it will make a loud noise (as though I'm revving the engine) and start wavering between going faster and staying around the speed that I was driving.  It's very scary and I think it may be a problem with the transmission (like it's wavering between gears).  I have no idea what exactly is wrong and I'd rather not spend the $$ to find out.  Well, DH was with me in the car and it did it and he was like - that's it, this car is gone!  So tomorrow we're going to go test drive a new (well new to us) car.

I guess with my new work situation I'm kind of worried about taking on a new car.  Sorry, just had to get that off of my chest!

  • That sounds really scary!  Good luck finding something.  We bought a 2008 last year and I hate having a car payment, but what can ya do.

  • I'm sorry! How scary and frustrating for you. Car payments can be difficult but it sounds like with the $$$ you're spending on repairs, you might still be spending less on a new (for you) car. Plus, you'll be safe with less worry about breaking down or not being able to stop (scary). Can you say what kind of car you have (hope you don't mind me asking).

I have a 2002 Mazda Tribute.  The funny part is that when I bought the car is was a consumer reports best pick...haha, guess everyone else must have gotten better ones then me!

  • I also had a lemon a few years ago and we even tried to "lemon law" it, but the dealer refused.  We ended up trading it in for my DH's truck at the time, which made me feel horrible because it was going to become someone else's problem. Make sure you get a carfax report on the used car you are looking to purchase, so make sure you write down the vin number.
