My baby is just about to start crawling, and I am looking around the house seeing choking hazards everywhere from crayons to stickers to ripped off portions of pop-up books. Oh, and mud, mulch, and sand are constantly dragged in from outside, and I really don't want my baby crawling around in it. Of course we pick up, but a lot of times my toddler is playing with these things and the baby is in the same room.
Oh, and when DS was a baby, we had gates all over the house, but now with a toddler it's really nice that he can get from one room to another, come downstairs when he wakes up, etc. I don't want my baby to be hurt, but I am sort of resistant to putting the gates back up again.
Did anyone struggle with this? Is it sort of intuitive once your baby starts crawling? Any advice?
Re: babyproofing with a toddler in the house
We never took the gates down. My oldest can open/close the gates and gets out just fine. the kids don't need to be all over the house though. Just the playroom, and the bathroom. Their bedrooms are for sleeping......
What I can tell you is that you become MORE lax with your second (and third, etc) kids in terms of childproofing. You will childproof much less and your kids do learn what they can/cannot touch.
