Please recommend the state parks in your state that are good to visit with kids.
I am planning a 3 week trip and am looking for the best state parks to stay in or around (camping). It is hard to tell what they are really like from the websites, so personal experience would be a big help.
Thank you
Re: If you live in NC, TN, West VA, VA, or PA...
Thank you for posting this! We are currently doing "research" to find a state park in any of these states that can accom. a family reunion next summer.
I have stayed in Pipestem State Park in WV. It was 20 years ago, and nice at the time. My brother just visited the same park again last weekend and he says the place has not changed in 20 years. (good and bad I guess). We've also stayed in Cumberland State Park (TN, I think). Also nice, but a long time ago. I was a teenager, and plenty to do that I remember.
I am going to map my route based on what we want to see, so if there is a particularly good one you know of, let me know. We will be gone for about 3 weeks, mostly just staying one night in each place, ultimately, we will spend 4-5 days in DC, then up through PA and back down in some fashion.
Not a state park, but the Smokey Mountains National Park is near us and is fantastic.
My guess is some of the state parks near here are really great, too, but I haven't been yet.
Pocahontas State Park in Chesterfied VA is really nice. It's right around Richmond VA.
There are trails to hike and a couple playgrounds as well as a huge pool with a water playground.
Here's a link to a park about 10 mins from us in NC. Not sure what interstate you will be taking or where you are headed but its about 10 mins off of I85 in NC. Lots to do for the kids there (not sure about how the campsites are). Up until #2 arrived we took DS about every weekend. All the entertainment for the kids (paddle boats, petting zoo, train ride etc.. is very reasonable $1 for everything pretty much). HTH.

Pipestem in WV is nice. Camp grounds, cabins, hotel so you can pick what type of lodging. Has pool, miniature golf/putt putt, paddle boats, horse back riding, trails for hiking, etc. It is really pretty set back in the mountains.
Dh and I went there for our HoneyMoon...we couldnt go far because he didnt have anytime off from work so only a weekend trip. It felt like we were 1000 miles away even though we were less than an hours drive.
There are TONS in Va as well I just havent been to any.
