Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

2nd bday party & Pinata - To get or Not to get...

that is the question.

There will be 5 children from 20 months to 2 years old.  Should I get a pinata?  Or do you think it's a waste at 2?  And if I should then what do I fill it with? None of the children eat candy.

Re: 2nd bday party & Pinata - To get or Not to get...

  • We went to an (adult's) birthday party where they had a pinata and it was kind of a traumatic experience for DS. Here is this colorful cute thing, and then it gets whacked and cracked open on the ground... even though it was filled with fun things like stickers and treats, he started crying when it fell down and broke open. Just some food for thought...

  • You going to give a 2 year old a big stick and tell them to go hit?
  • That would be a big fat NO! Bad idea on so many levels.
  • We had one at his first birthday and of course all the little ones took a swing, but it was the dads who enjoyed it the most (and enjoyed what was inside). Last year, I thought it was cute. This year, there is no possible way I would give my ds a bat or stick and let him swing at something. He is a lunatic and that just doesn't seem safe haha.

  • I would not. We had one at DD's 2nd bday party but it was a pull string Elmo one so we did not crack it open. Most of the kids were older and had a great time, but I would not let a group of 2 year olds anywhere near a bat or large stick.

  • I think 2 year olds are too small for the concept of pinatas.

  • We did one at DD's birthday party but we had a bunch of older children as well as little ones. If you are doing a traditional pinata with no pull string then it may be a waste because one of the adults will have to end up hitting it. Luckily the oldest kid at DDs party was 12 and they were able to break it. Maybe a pull string one would be the way to go if you decide to go with one. Personally, if there weren't older kids at DD's party I probably wouldn't have gotten one at all.
  • You said it yourself: none of the children eat candy.

Theyre too young. Just make wonderful goodie bags and call it a day honey!

  • We start the pinata hitting young in my family. LOL...DD hit her 1st pintata at 6 months old!  For my DD's 1st bday we had an Elmo pinata & we filled it with candy for the older kids & goldfish crackers for the little ones.  The small children used a glitter baton to hit it & the older ones used a pinata stick.  I have some photos on my blog of some of the little kids (tapping) hitting the pintata.
