hi everyone!
i don't know if this idea will help you, but i just thought i'd share our name selection method. it saved us after months of intense bickering!
so we selected 6 close family members (my sister, my cousin, and both sets of parents) and everyone (including us) sat down with the SSA list of top 100 names (my husband did insist that the name come from the top 100). then we all picked our favorites. each person was allowed to pick as many names as they wanted. most picked between 6 and 10. then my husband and i sat down and compared all the choices.
out of all the names chosen only ONE NAME appeared on every single list (including both of ours): Mia! and so the name was decided. it ended up being a really fun process, and we ended up with a great name that's sure to please all of our loved ones as well as ourselves.
...i just wanted to share since it took us so long to come up with a method that worked and kept us sane.
Re: our magical name picking method
Yikes!
I mean, I'm glad it worked for you, but that method is anathema to me.
First of all, I would never let the -aden craze dominating the top-100 control my name choices! In fact, we have a rule that our name choice CANNOT come from the top 100! There are a lot of classics that aren't on there at all, and a lot of really horrible things that are (Makayla, anyone? Nevaeh?).Just because a LOT of crazy people decided to name their child something, I don't want a lovely, if underused choice to fall by the wayside (say: Nicole, Sara, Michelle, Rebecca, and Violet, which all miss the top 100 by a few slots)
Secondly, we're not even letting our family know our name choices. They don't get an opinion -- it's our baby.
well you could choose your list from anywhere (even just compile a list of 50 or so names yourself). you can also select your "panel" from anyone (friends, colleagues or whoever you want).
and of course, it may not end up helping you. but , if you've narrowed it down a lot and still feel stuck, and then one name seems to show up over and over again, it might help you to make that final call. it's also a way to get input from your "community" but still keep the name a secret (if you want)
