Hey ladies. I'm new here. I'm 17 weeks pregnant and considered high risk because of a benign tumor on my pituitary gland. Is there anyone else here that has a Prolactinoma?
We found the tumor last year and was technically infertile because the tumor was causing the pituitary gland to secrete the hormone prolactin. After being on medication my hormone levels finally came back down to normal and a month later I became pregnant! All of my doctors were surprised, as were DH and I! As soon as we found out I had to stop taking my medication to control it, so add that to the fact that your prolactin level naturally raises when you are pregnant my doctors say that there is a pretty good chance that it could cause the tumor to grow.
They told me that I have a higher chance of miscarriage with this, but since I have made it past my first trimester I have finally started feeling more confident. However, since I haven't had any problems yet it worries me about what is yet to come. The Perinatal told me that basically the only two options I have if the tumor starts growing are either having to deliver early or surgery while pregnant. My last blood levels were slightly elevated but not enough to cause concern, but of course it worries me!
Re: Anyone with a Pituitary Adenoma?
i have a enlarged pituitary gland that does not give off any hormone and my stalk is moved slightly. They can't find an adenoma but they treat it like I do have one. I know that prolactin levels become elevated normally during pregnancy so they do not watch mine during pregnancy. Obviously you have an adenoma so they probably watch you differently.
They were concerned slightly about me because I didn't have any MRI after I had my daughter to see if whatever is wrong with my pituitary was made worse by pregnancy. So basically they were deciding whether or not to MRI me now. They finally decided that they will just watch for visual changes. I also have hypothyroidism...and that is the thing that scares me most. I hope your levels stay low and you get to carry your baby to the end
Sorry that I don't have any advice but I understand the anxiety.
