NBR: Cat pee

Can someone please tell me how the hell to get the stink of cat out of my house?  We moved in almost 3 weeks ago, it never smelled when showed or during walk throughs, but when we started moving we noticed it immediately.  I have vacuumed, used pet odor remover and vacuumed, Glade Plug Ins, Lysol.  I am about to call Stanley Steemer or someone to come out and clean the carpet, but I was hoping someone on here might have another solution that wasn't quite so expensive.

  • Urine B Gone? It works for dog urine, I would imagine it would work for cat too.. They usually have it at walmart and the target around here has it too.

  • I don't have direct experience having never owned a cat. But I've heard that cat urine odor is very difficult to remove, and often requires replacing the carpet. :-(

I hope that's not the case for you and that you're able to find something that works!

  • Simple Solution might work as well. You get it at PetSmart and Petco, although Target or somewhere similar may have it.

Unfortunately, though, you may need to just get it cleaned. We actually got a good Hoover rug cleaner on Amazon for $140 with free shipping. We've used it several times and have definitely gotten our moneys worth from it. Going that route may save you money in the long run.

Good luck getting the smell out. That's no fun!

  • first i would get a black light (they sell battery powered ones specifically to find cat pee but you could just use a black light and a lamp too) to find where the cat pee is... or you could just use your nose lol.

    then make this solution:

    make a paste out of:

    1/4 cup baking soda

    2-3 tbs dish soap

then slowly mix in 1 large bottle hydrogen peroxide (the tall one, a liter maybe?)

either pour it directly from bowl to the pee spot or put it in a spray bottle and spray it wherever.  you don't really have to worry about getting it out of the carpet, as long as you just pour it and don't scrub it in, it shouldn't leave a mark or anything, but you could always shampoo a day or so afterwards to give it time to soak in.

whatever you do, don't shake this mixture bc it will foam up!  and if you don't use it all at once you can save it and use it later though it works best when fresh.  just don't store it in a container with a cap sealed all the way bc it does expand over time.

this is the only thing that has worked for us, not even natures miracle worked for us.  plus its cheap too!!   you probably have all these ingredients on hand anyway.

trust me.  i've got 6 cats and have dealt with A LOT of cat pee!

  • I think you can rent carpet steam cleaners from the grocery store too, in case buying one or hiring someone to do it is too expensive. Good luck, that's not a good odor :(
  • several of the above suggestions are great and I've used them with our four. However, as one PP said, if you've got carpet, you might be SOL. Cat Pee is kind of evil like that - if it gets into the pad, you have to SOAK everything with a treatment solution of your choice and then get it out. It's often easier to just pull out the carpet and the pad. If you can isolate the problem area, pull back part of the carpet and take a look at the pad. Sometimes, cleaner companies get the carpet, but the pad is still trapping the scent - which could be why you didn't smell it on the walk throughs.

If you do replace the carpeting, check your underflooring. If it doesn't have to be replaced, paint it with Killz before you put down the new padding and carpet

  • I agree with alot of the pp.  We had an issue with cat pee as well and we ended up having to rip up the carpet and part of the subfloor because the pee had gotten down past the carpet and pad into the wood part!  I Hope you have better luck with cleaning it, but cat pee is one of the worst odors to remove.

  • When we moved into our has we had the carpets cleaned and the guy said he found urine spots so he had to put an enzyme down to pull up the urine out of the carpet. Who knows. But we ended up buying a steam cleaner and have gotten our money's worth out of it. I am about to do our living room again this weekend. You can usually find like $99 whole house cleaning deals from carpet cleaners, we did the dry cleaning type so our carpets were not wet and we could walk on them right away.
