Visiting Door County - any tips?

I've never been up there so I have no clue where to begin!  I've heard it's beautiful, though.  I'm going to look for a cottage to rent for a few days or a week.  Any tips on which town to stay in or are they all fairly similar?  We have a one-year-old, so will be doing a lot of walking around town, eating out, walking/hiking, visiting the beach, perhaps kayaking/boating.  Any tips you can offer would be great - thanks!

  • What time of year are you thinking of going?  I went with my husband last year in September.  It was really nice there. That was my first time going.  We were camping so it was a little different.  So as far as places to go I can't help with that.  The towns are all pretty close together.  We really liked Fish Creek.  It seemed to be in the middle of everything and we liked the area itself.  Peninsula State Park is there and was absolutely gorgeous.  We thought Washington Island was a waste of time.  Hopefully I could help you some.  If you want more info on where and what we did you can always PM me.

  • My husband and I stayed at the Cottage Retreat in Door County for our honeymoon this past summer. It's in Egg Harbor and it was very nice. https://www.cottageretreat.com/ We visited several of the state parks while there: Potawotami, Peninsula, Newport, and Whitefish Dunes. We also went to a place called "The Farm" which your LO would probably enjoy... you can feed the animals corn and the baby animals bottles of milk :) Have a great trip! I LOVE Door County!
  • My DH and I LOVE The Inn At Cedar Crossing Restaurant! It is amazing and below the Inn at Cedar Crossing. In Sturgeon Bay. There are also cute little art galleries and boutiques. The Inn (which is a b&b) serves the most amazing French Toast and you can get milk and cookies and coffee brought to your room.

My mouth is watering just thinking about the restaurant. The two times we went there my DH got ostrich and elk and I (both times) had the risotto. YUM!

    Have fun :)
