Work vent

Today we found out what our raises would be and I'm fuming. I knew that I wasn't going to get much, the company announced earlier this year we would get up to a 3% raise. After receiving my performance review score in April I didn't think I did too bad even though I didn't really understand the math used to figure it out and my supervisor couldn't explain it either. Well come to find out my raise is a whopping 0.5%...that equals 6 cents...6 f'ing cents. I asked my supervisor how the performance scores were used to calculate our merit increase and I didn't get a straight answer, she said she wasn't sure and she would e-mail me information. Then, to add insult to injury my supervisor informs me that HR has increased base pay by 2.5%. So now, Joe Blow who comes walking in off the street with no experience and zero knowledge of wtf they're doing will make 21 cents an hour less than me. To me that says all my experience, schooling, and training is worth 21 cents.

When I talked to DH about this he said "Well that's fair value, I had to deal with that at Best Buy, maybe you aren't doing as well as you thought you were". Um...thanks for the support?!? Also, even though we're not supposed to, my friend and I were discussing things after work and I was telling her how I didn't understand any of the math and wasn't getting answers from our supervisor. She said she had figured the math out so we looked over my scores and when she calculated my merit she got 1.3% vs. 0.5%. She was as perplexed as I was. Her score and another co-workers score calculated out to the merits they received using her math. I just don't get it, my supervisor said I was doing a great job and never hears any complaints about me, it doesn't make sense. I'm just really hurt right now that after all the hard work I put in day after day it's not reflected in my pay.

I'm going to talk to my supervisor about how my raise was determined because I feel like something was not calculated right. I really hope there was an error because I feel so under valued right now. I know I should be happy I have a job right now with a steady paycheck, but it really takes a blow to my self esteem.

Thanks for listening ladies! I just needed to get my feelings out so I don't mope and grumble all night.

Re: Work vent

  • Hopefully it was just a math error and this will get fixed pronto! Sorry that you are dealing with this.

  • That stinks!  Hopefully it was a calculation error and it will be resolved ASAP.
  • Hopefully it's like pp's said and it's a simple error that can be fixed.  If not, I'd be really tempted to tell them they can keep their 6 cents.  I wouldn't have the balls to do it, but that's exactly how I'd feel!

Um, wow, I'd be upset too if that's what they originally told you! Hope it was a mistake and they get it fixed asap.

  • Honestly this is how DH's raises are done and they have crazy pay scales at work.  He's an air traffic controller and their pay scale was completely messed up in a previous contract negotiation so there were people that got hired within a week of each other making $20,000 difference per year in pay.  DH hired in before this mess but it did cost us money when we moved from Illinois to Indiana last year.  (Short answer there's a lot of politics behind the pay scales that's not relevant to this conversation that I won't get into.)

How his raise was calculated at his previous position (he's in training now at a new facility so he's out of this loop when it comes to raises) it is split so that the top 1/3 get X percentage, middle 1/3 get Y percentage, and bottom 1/3 get nothing (or something close to it).  For them they base it on performance scores but also who has done the most training since its an important part of their job (but who doesn't have a job that involves training these days!) but not everyone is willing to do it.  The more training you did the more likely you were to get in the top tier of raises.  Bad part is when this was first put into place they waited until the end of the year to tell people what the criteria would be.  So more than one person was pissed b/c they had good/great reviews but little to no training so they got no raise or very little.  My guess is that there is some other criteria that you're not aware of that's affecting what you're getting.  HR should have everything written out though for liability purposes though (meaning if they are questioned about the rationale).  GL and hope you get a straight answer.

  • Ugh, I hope that it was a miscalculation and they get it straightened out asap!
