Amber experts we need help!

See the below post regarding the Finn sale.

A lot of us are interested in getting amber for our babies.  The Baltic Amber sale is over today but it sounds like none of us are sure what to get.  Can you give us the benefit of your knowledge?

Length? Style?  Clasp? Styles for boys?

I think the lighter the better but there are only so many that are available for sale currently.  If you could give specific recs, I know I would really appreciate it.  I would love to take advantage of this great sale since Evan is in the throws of teething right now.

Thank you so, so much!

Re: Amber experts we need help!

  • Ok I did find this on their site which I've been using to see what is still available in stock:

Generally speaking, the lighter the color of amber the more succinic acid it contains.  The lightest colors contain up to three times more than the darkest color.

Here are the youth necklaces we carry that contain the highest amounts of succinic acid.

    Custard Chip
    Turmeric & Cream Chip
    Light Oval
    Light Bean
    Pumpkin Butter Oval
    Mustard Bean
    Butter Round
    Milk & Butter Round
    Pumpkin Butter Round
    Butter Pendant

    Light Mix

Does anyone have any personal preference on what looks more masculine?  I'm afraid DH is going to fight me on his son wearing a necklace (I know, I know).

I was kinda leaning towards the chip or round?

I thought I would measure Evan and go with something shorter in hopes that he won't pull at it.  I thought I would use my fabric tape.  Sound good?

It seems like the magnetic clasps are not popular, nor are many available.  Also their is the risk of them ingesting and issues with intestines.  I'm assuming most do the regular clasp and then remove for sleeping?

  • I got mine from another store but 11" is a popular length.  I have more like 12" and sometimes wish it was a bit shorter.  Here's a (not too good) pic of her yesterday but you can see the length of 12" on her:

    The lighter, the better supposedly.

I have rounded beads which I recommend because it's gentle to the skin.  I also have a screw closure, which still can pop open if it's pulled on.

I have a girl, but her beads are varying shades of brown and tan and people comment that she has a "pretty necklace" but I think it looks like something a boy could wear - very surfer dude-like.

ForFinn is a great company, never heard anything but rave reviews for them.  Did a contest with them on my blog a year or so ago and were great to work with and shipped the prize to the winner very quickly.

  • Also, I used to take off for every bath and nap and sleeping but then would forget to put it back on and she would start feeling her teething.  We now leave it on 24/7.  I sometimes come in her room after she sleeps and find it on the floor next to her crib - it's that easy for them to remove or have it pop off if it's yanked on.  She didn't even notice it until a couple months ago when she started walking and exploring and checking out her reflection and adjusting her clothes, etc when looking in a mirror.
  • I have a 12 inch one with round beads for DS.  It was the "light mix" or something along those lines.  We also have the screw clasp.  I tend to move it to his ankle for naps and at night take it off. It is a pretty necklace but it isn't too feminine. I like the length of the 12 inch.   It might be a bit on the long side, but that means it usually stays just below the collar of his shirt.  I think it helps him not notice it.  Also having that bit of extra length means I can wrap it around his ankle for naps.

  • I bough a green 14 inch and a light mixed color 13 inch on sale a few months ago.  They are to long but do work DS can get them in his mouth although he has only tried a few times.  I take them off when he takes his bath before bed and put it back on in the morning he does nap with it on.

  • You could try this alternative if you don't want a necklace...

Oh, I wish I had seen your response 10 minutes earlier! I just ordered a 12.5 inch one for C but it sounds like it will be too long if she can suck on it. Oh well, we can try it - maybe she can wear it as an anklet or something else till she's bigger.

  • S has the Rainbow Round but I don't think it's overly girly.  My nephew sports the Light Mix.

Ours is a 12" and it still fits S, but she's tiny, too.

We have the screw on clasp.  When she was tiny, I would undo it from her neck and wrap it around her ankle while she slept.  Eventually she just started to sleep in it.  She's done teething now but still won't let me take it off.  Ever. lol
