Re-post from 24+: Questions for cloth diapering mamas

I am considering using cloth diapers for DC2 (I didn't for DD).  I have a few questions for moms that did/ still do this:

1) Did you cloth diaper from the beginning?  DD pooped literally 8-10 times a day when she was a newborn.

2) What brand do you use?

3) If you are a working mom, did you send LO to daycare in cloth or disposable?

4) Did anyone not use cloth exclusively (e.g. use disposible when out or traveling?)

Any other advice you have would be great!!
TIA!!!

Re: Re-post from 24+: Questions for cloth diapering mamas

  • 1) DD used disposables as a NB but DS has never worn one.  DS used 20 diapers a day for a while since he pooped so much.

    2) We use a hodge-podge of fitteds, PFs and a few pockets and AIOs.

    3) If I had worked I would have put them in cloth.

    4) We have always traveled with cloth.  If we travel longer than a few days, it's to see family and we wash at their house.

Just lurk for a while, ask questions as needed.  It's really the best way to get acquainted.

    GL!

I am considering using cloth diapers for DC2 (I didn't for DD).  I have a few questions for moms that did/ still do this:

    1) Did you cloth diaper from the beginning?  DD pooped literally 8-10 times a day when she was a newborn.  No, we did one-size diapers and started around 3 weeks.  Had a 9 lb 5 oz baby.

    2) What brand do you use? Bumgenius 3.0, organic AIO, Blueberries deluxe OS pocket, Thirsties Duo Diaper, and Goodmama

    3) If you are a working mom, did you send LO to daycare in cloth or disposable? WAHM

    4) Did anyone not use cloth exclusively (e.g. use disposible when out or traveling?) We've been using exclusively.  I LOVE not buying any sposies at all and wasting that money :-)  I don't forsee us having to use any until we go to Aruba next summer.  Our beach condo has a washer this year so we're set.

Any other advice you have would be great!!

  • 1. From about the 3rd day of life. I preferred wiping poos with cloth vs disposable diapers

    2. You name it, I probably have some. Green Mountain Diapers prefolds, Thirsties covers and pockets, Happy Heinies, Fuzzibunz, BumGenius, and a few others I'd have to look at

    3. The daycare we chose only does disposables. Our second choice was open to using CDs.

    4. We don't use cloth exclusively. DD got a bad diaper rash early on and we went to disposables for a week or so. We still use disposables at night (but I just bought my first overnight CD and will soon be taking that plunge) and we use disposables for travel.

  • I didn't start CDing until #2 was 6 months old (#1 still wasn't potty trained for 6 months after that).  I couldn't imagine using another disposable again.

    1) We will start on day one with this baby.  We're using GMD prefolds, fitteds that I made and other diapers from the stash

    2) I've tried everything...mostly I like pockets, Fuzzi Bunz, Blueberries and Bum Genius are my favorites.  I like fitteds too, but they're definitely not the first thing I grab

    3) I am a SAH/WAHM, but my kids do go to preschool.  Both kids were allowed to wear their cloth diapers in preschool.

    4) We use cloth exclusively, like I said earlier, I can't imagine having to use another disposable.  CDing while out and about, or even on vacation is SO much easier than you might imagine.

Check out the EFF Blog for SO many fantastic details and loads of info on cloth diapering :)

  • I started using cloth diapers at 2 mos.

I use mostly bumGenius brand (their AIOs and pockets) but I also like Blueberry (they are more expensive though).

Working mom - daycare in cloth. unless I've been bad and haven't done enough laundry in which case I resort to sposies maybe 1x every 2 weeks. I have 3 wet bags to store the diapers at daycare.

when she was younger and I was traveling with access to a washer/dryer, I much preferred to stick with cloth. now that she's bigger and all-over-the-place unstoppable, I can't deal with cloth when traveling (I'm usually traveling solo with her) just because I don't have time to do laundry.

we use sposies at night still.

  • 1. We didn't start CDing DS until 6 months, but will CD our NB from day 1.

    2. Bum Genius mostly.

    3. He goes to daycare in cloth.

    4. We use disposable if we're out of town too long between laundry (more than 3 days) but other than that, we use cloth.

  • 1) We started using cloth when DD's cord stump fell off (3 days old).  She was also a copious pooper (still is, actually).

    2) At first, we used prefolds from greenmountaindiapers.com with Litewrap, Thirsties XS and Thirsties Duo covers.  Duos were my faves, followed by the other Thirsties.  Now, for day, we use sized Fuzzibunz pocket diapers and BumGenius 3.0 pockets (recently discontinued, but they've come out with a 4.0 version).  For night we use fitted diapers: either Goodmamas, Bububebes or Sustainablebabyish.  We use wool covers over those (no brand, I knit them myself).

    3) No idea.

    4) We've used disposables a bit.  I hate them.  Yesterday I had to put DD in one because we were on a walk and that was all that was left in my diaper bag.  As soon as we got home I put her back in cloth.  Aside from the fact that I really dislike disposables (I hate the feel, I hate the smell, I hate the blowouts), it's just more complicated to use both, IMO.
