Cervical check for position?

Wow, I didn't even see this board, I should have been in here a long time ago!

Anyway, I have a question for natural-minded mommies. I am planning to refuse cervical checks until I am in labor, however, my OB said that he would check LO's position as part of a cervical check. Do they need to do a cervical check to be more certain of position, or should they be able to tell just from feeling your abdomen?

I want to refuse the check but I also want to know LO's position...

Re: Cervical check for position?

  • My mws could tell where the baby's head was just by feeling my abdomen.  I don't know whether you mean that kind of position, or whether you're wondering how far the baby has descended.  My mws needed to do an internal to figure that out.  I asked for one internal at about 39 weeks because I wanted to know whether I had made progress, and I hadn't.  This time I won't get an internal - no need for it, and it was just discouraging the last time.

  • Ditto pp:  If you mean how the baby is situated in your uterus, my MW can tell that without a cervical exam.  If you mean where the baby is in your pelvis, like what station, then they can't tell that from just feeling your abdomen.

My MW doesn't do cervical exams, and I don't want any.

    this.

i had internals at 38 weeks and 40 weeks. i was 3-4cm both times and still went almost another week pregnant. i won't be having internals this time.

  • I would want to know why he thinks knowing the position is helpful.  I just read this blog post by a doula, and agree with her 100%

  • My first midwife didn't do them. This midwife (whom I actually trust and agree more with) did. I didn't want one, but I didn't really refuse either. She said she wanted to check babies position (which I also was confused on, since I figured she could do that externally) but perhaps she meant station?
  • Yeah, I just want to know orientation, not station... and it's more curiosity than that I HAVE to know.
