Hi everyone,
Recently my husband and I have been thinking we'd name our little boy Simon. However, when we tell others what we may be naming him, we don't get good reactions. My mom has said she doesn't care for it much, and my FIL emailed my husband "...so if you have 2 more sons, will you name them Alvin and Theodore?", which I thought was pretty mean.
So my question is, what boy names do you think are similar to Simon (not unusual or made up, but not very common)
TIA! ![]()
Re: Names similar to Simon...?
I think you should stick with Simon.
I wouldn't change it just because of a reaction from your rude FIL (or mom).

I love Simon! Don't change it because of their reactions. I just wouldn't share anymore. We didn't tell anyone what we were naming DS and I know some of our family members would have had negative comments. Of course they all "loved" his name once he was here. My aunt actually told me that she didn't like his name at first, but "love the kid, love the name!" (her words).
ETA: I just noticed that we have the same due date!
This!
Then I'd do my research on everything Simon - it's biblical, being the original name of Apostle Peter. There are pop culture references too, but I've noticed that if I back up a name with some historical context, it's more accepted as a name.
And besides, it's a breath of fresh air in the world of top ten boys names.

If you love it, go for it! It's hard enough agreeing on a name as a couple without trying to please everyone else!
We always name our babies a couple days after finding out the sex, and not everyone has liked our choices, but we don't care! Our baby, our choice. My brother hated Avery, and asked me several times if we were serious, but 2 years later, he actually denies that he ever disliked it! It's her name, and it fits her!
I saw that too!
Tell your husband to tell his dad to shove it!
Simon is a perfectly nice name.
And let this be a lesson to you... No matter if you decide to keep the name, or to change it, don't tell anyone the name until the baby is born.
When prompted, just say, "We're still deciding." and leave it at that! Once the baby is born, you're bound to get less snarky comments.
PS: I have Eleanor on my list. I put off adding it at first just because of the Chipettes reference. But then I realized: I LOVE the name Eleanor, and who cares if someone references a chipmunk... chipmunks are super cute!! Especially Eleanor! And Simon is so smart and level-headed. He's a good role model for his brothers, but he also knows how to have fun! I can't think of a better association, even if it is a fictional character.
