how to spot clean couch?

any product reccomendations for spot cleaning dirt/stains on our couch.  I don;t even know what material it is--just a regular, standard "cotton-like" material.  I tried one product called forcefield and it did nothing.  I LOATHE this light colored couch!!!  TIA
