Taking off from the post from a few days about about how you met your SO, how did he propose? Or did you do it? Or, if you're not married to your SO, how did you "know" you were meant to be together?
Me... Hubby took me to dinner at a very fancy-schmancy 5-star resort to celebrate his new job. Or so I thought. After the meal, we went walking around the hotel grounds and when we were crossing the footbridge over the pond, he kept stopping and pointing out ducks and stuff. I thought he was being very weird and I was cold and tired and ready to go home. But he was actually waiting for other people to stop cross the bridge so we'd be alone. I looked at him and he was down on one knee.. holding out a ring box. Damn lucky I didn't knock the thing out of his hand and into the water!
Re: NBR: How did you get engaged?
This is a really long story so I will try to make it short. DH took me up to the skihouse we were renting in Vermont. He got lost on the way (um weird!) so that should have tipped me off. He attempted to propose three times before he actually did the deed.
1. There was a river by our house that we would walk along and plan our future. We went to walk there but it was closed for hunting season.
2. Then we went snowboarding and he wanted to hike up to a pretty area with a nice view. It was early in the season and I was out of shape so I wouldn't go.
3. That night we went to a fancy restaurant for dinner but didn't have a good table. There was one table that was near the fireplace and was a little more private. I mentioned during dinner that was the table to propose because it was so romantic and it would be sad at any other table.
DH finally gave up and proposed while we were watching tv. Totally disappointing and DH knew it but he said he couldn't wait any longer.
My dh had bought the ring a few days ago prior to giving it to me. He had something planned in the woods/picnic. We were having friends come over and were going to dinner this particular night.
He comes flying down the stairs and I am sitting on the couch wondering what is wrong with him. He got down on one knee and proposed! He said he couldn't wait and having the ring was killing him! I then said oh so I guess having Steve and Sharon over was a hoax? He said no they will be here soon!
We went out to dinner and called some other friends and just celebrated the night away. It was one of the best nights I ever had!
My DH and I were invited to a family friend's house for dinner. It was December 23rd, and there were Christmas lights up all over town. We were late (as usual), but we were driving around looking at all the pretty lights anyway when he suddenly turned into the marina. I said, "What are you doing?! We are already late!" He said that he wanted to check out a boat real quick.
He tried, but couldn't get me out of the truck. He got out, walked around in front of the truck and just stood there. I remember rolling my eyes and muttering something under my breath :P
Next thing I know, he is at my side of the truck. He got down on one knee and asked me. I had a plate of asparagus between my feet on the floor of the truck, a gift on my lap, and I couldn't process that it was actually happening.
Every time I leave the island, I have to drive by the marina. I always look over and smile.
I wonder how much better it would have been if I actually got OUT of the truck!
Oh, and when we got to the dinner party, my parents were there with champagne
Ours was a little weird, but fun. We were technically already engaged (booked the church, reception venue, looked at rings, etc.) but he hadn't said the magic words. We were 3 months out from our wedding and he still hadn't proposed. I didn't think of it as a big deal. My mom didn't get her e-ring until her 5th wedding anniversary.
We went to lunch at this little town where we go to a festival every year. It was 95 in the shade and humid, and DH said we should "walk off our lunch". I looked at him like he had 3 heads. But we started walking, and we stopped at this spot where they usually have a statue to celebrate the festival. This not being festival time, it was gone, and DH got really upset. I didn't see the big deal. Just when he was about to pull out the ring, I noticed a landscaping sign next to a bunch of weeds, and said, "Yeah, nice landscaping." Totally killed the mood and he suggested we walk by the river.
Next thing I know he's on one knee by the riverbank asking me to marry him. Even though I already knew we were getting married, i cried like a baby. Then I said he had to call my dad and get his blessing. It was the funniest conversation:
DH: Your daughter says I have to ask you to marry her
Dad: Yep
DH: Well, I'm asking
Dad: OK
Then Dad got all schmoopy and said he'd love to have him as a son in law.
Tim and I were living 3 hours apart but still dating very steadily. We were talking on the phone one night about nothing in particular and all of a sudden he said something like "Would you like to get married?" Later he told me that he proposed over the phone because if I said no, he could hang up.
Nice follow up, BB!
DH and I had been dating about 3.5 months. I had to conduct a site-inspection at a little resort where we were have a big meeting. Since it was a couple hours away, my boss told me to do it over the weekend and bring my boyfriend along. The resort rents out cottages, so we got a romantic little cottage to stay in. As we are driving into the resort property, one of the first things we see is a little church on the property. Awww...cute. After we get checked into our romantic little cottage, I'm laying on the bed and we're talking aobut how cute the resort is. I commented how cute it would be to get married in the little church on property. DH says "Do you want to get married?". I said, jokingly, "Is that supposed to be a proposal?". He said "Well, do you?". I sat up on the bed and said "Are you proposing to me?", because he never actually said "Do you want to marry ME?". He sighs and says "Well, I guess I should do this properly..." and gets down on his knees, takes my hands into his and begins to tell me a bunch of mooshy stuff that made me cry and finally asks "Will you marry me?". It was completely spontaneous and unplanned. He didn't even have a ring (I actually don't have an engagement ring). And the resort is in such a remote area that neither of us had cell phone reception and had to wait until we were driving home the next day to call and tell people.
This was on February 2, 2008 - Groundhog Day! So now we always celebrate Groundhog Day.
We were going on a short cruise so he knew I was leaving work early to get packed up so we could head out the next day. I came to my place and he had a huge bouquet there with 2 cards, one telling me I was going on a scavenger hunt, ostensibly for the promise ring I had demanded before moving in with him, and the other containing the first clue. I basically drove all over LA (picking up other clues and small gifts along the way, including the promise ring) before ending up back at the hotel where we had our first date at the bar there. He had reserved a room in this swanky 5 star hotel for us and when I got to the room, he had Frank Sinatra's "The Way You Look Tonight" playing, he was in a tux with Dom chilling, a trail of rose petals led to the bed where he had spelled out in rose petals "Will U Marry Me?" He did good.

Funny! Do ya'll see the common thread here??
Men annoy us just before they make us happy.
DH, I, and his four children all moved in together about three weeks prior. We were sitting in the living room having a games night - I remember the two youngest (4 and 6 at the time) were playing checkers. I was sitting on the couch, thinking how story-book it all looked... no fighting, just enjoying each others company. DH gathered the children all together and the turned around and looked at me and said: "Will you marry us"? Prince gave me the ring, and I was smiling so hard I could hardly speak.
At the wedding we did a family ceremony, where I promised to be a parent to the children too. It was really special and there wasn't a dry eye in the house!!
DH told me he wanted to take me out to reward me for being a good sport during March Madness and letting him watch all the games without complaint. I thought it was a little weird but figured he was just looking for and excuse to go for a nice steak.
We got dressed up and were sitting in the living room before we left and he was acting strange. Finally he looked at me and said he'd been thinking about his life and right then I knew I was either about to get proposed to or broken up with. Luckily he finished up with, "and I want to spend the rest of it with you". I of course said, "yes, yes, yes".
After dinner (which I was too excited to eat) we were already planning to go to a party at my friends house. We decided not to say anything and see how long it took them to notice the ring. We there about 15 minutes before my BFF saw it and screaming and excitement commenced.
It wasn't very exciting, really. My H is the sweetest guy in the world, but isn't a romantic at all.
We were in our living room in Vancouver having tea on a Saturday, when he just blurted out, "maybe we should get married."
That was March of '08, ten years after we met and 9 years after we got together, so I wasn't about to criticize his technique

It was a Saturday in May and we had gone to a Phillies game with my family. There was a rain delay so the game took FOREVER, but I really didn't mind b/c my niece and nephew were there and I was having a great time. DH, on the other hand, had been planning on asking me after the game that day, so when the rain started, he said his stomach started eating itself. After a 2.5 hour rain delay, we went home to our house. We started watching TV on the couch and he asked if I wanted some ice cream (knowing all along that I never turn down ice cream) and he went upstairs (we live in a split level) to get it. He comes back down to the family room and hands me the ice cream which I proceed to put down on the coffee table. I just put it there and start talking and talking all the while he is eating his ice cream and mine is sitting on the table. I finally finish my story and pick up my cup. I eat a few bites and then I hit something hard. The ring was in the ring box which was in a plastic bag. As soon as I realized that it was a ring box, I knew what was inside and I pulled it out so fast that I got ice cream everywhere!
He took the box, got down on one knee and said some beautiful things before asking me to do him the honor of being his wife. It was great- cried so hard, and then we made phone calls while having a glass of wine.
After 10 years of being together (mostly long distance), we went up to Michigan for my friend's wedding and went to Greenfield Village (a historic homes outdoor museum) the next day...a place we've visited quite often. We were just coming out of my favorite house, when he tried veering me over to the side. I was extremely nervous, with a little hint of what was coming, so I just kept walking. He pulled out a ring and proposed..nothing romantic, but very sweet and a funny story to tell our children. He actually had the ring for a while, but wanted to propose somewhere that had memories for us.
I returned home from a work trip on a Friday afternoon. DH said he wanted to make me a nice home cooked meal since I had been eating out all week (DH actually does cook, so this was not terribly remarkable). I did some work for him and said "Well, since you are making a nice dinner, let's eat at the dining room table with wine, candles, and music."
After we ate, we were sitting at the table talking and eventually he said "I am so lucky to have you in my life. And that is what I told your father when I spoke with him this week." Then he got down on one knee and proposed. I tearfully accepted and reportedly gasped loudly when I saw the ring. I don't remember the gasp or really anything he said between the bit about talking to my father and "Will you marry me?"
The funny part of the story involves him talking to my father. DH called, my mom answered, DH asked for my father. Mom didn't recognize his voice, so she said Dad wasn't available and asked who was calling. DH said "DH. DH Lastname, who lives with your daughter." She then passed the phone off to Dad. They exchanged pleasantries and then DH said "I plan to ask your daughter to marry me and I was wondering if you had any objections." Dead silence. DH thought he gave my father a heart attack! DH recovered and said "I have clearly caught you off guard with this. Why don't I give you time to think about it and I will call back tomorrow night." He called back the next night, Dad apologized and admitted that he was totally shocked by DH's call, and then gave his blessing. It all ended well, but DH had a few tense moments in there!
Pesky - Wow! That sounds amazing!
Smiley - That is so beautiful. I love that both the proposal and the wedding included the whole family! I teared up jus treading about it.
Every year the town we live in does this big Christmas Village downtown. Different businesses sponser these little buildings that have holiday scenes in them, Santa has a workshop where the kids can visit him, there are usually musical performances at the ampitheater and vendors selling cocoa and treats...
I'd been bugging DH to go see it since I'm a huge holiday freak, and finally he agreed. That morning there was a delivery for him that I had to sign for, but being so close to Christmas I just figured it was a present and set it aside for him.
When he got home and saw the box he got all nervous and asked if I'd looked at it. I told him no and asked why, he refused to say and hid the box very quickly.
So we went out to dinner then went and walked around the Christmas Village. I was teasing DH because he hadn't wanted to go there, but he was the one walking so slow. Turns out he was waiting for people to pass us so he could have some privacy!
He pulled me to the side under some trees covered with lights in front of a Nativity scene and said that the past year had been one of the best in his life and that the only thing that could possibly make it better is if I would consent to be his wife!
Well, it turns out that the package that had arrived had a customs form on the front that listed the contents of the box! He was so afraid that I'd see it and would know he was going to propose before he got the chance that he scrapped his original plans and proposed that night.
He was planning on proposing the next month while we were in Hawaii but just figured that he couldn't wait that long!
Oh I love this story!
Christmas Day. But I certainly didn't get jipped with Christmas presents. I was so happy, I cried for the rest of the day. I'm sure I was a pretty picture.
Great stories, everyone!
I'd been seeing DH for just over a year. I'd been spending Friday nights to Monday mornings at his place for months and was "officially" moving in with him on 11/2/07.
I had this feeling that he needed to be sure we could "really' live together before proposing (after his bad experience with his ex-wife) and not just on weekends so I was OK doing so without a ring. I thought he'd ask me in a few months.
On moving day I got to our apt. before he did (he was getting the truck to get my stuff) and unloaded a few things that I had brought in my car. I'd ordered some books from Amazon and had the box delivered there. It was waiting for me when I arrived so, impatient person that I am, I opened it and started reading one of the books while waiting for him.
DH came in and saw me there. I was getting myself together to head to my parents' house to get my things and he said to me: "Something else was in your Amazon box."
I'm like: "I didn't order anything else!" And I went to look at the package and he had put a ring box inside, flipped open to reveal the engagement ring.
I just looked at it, dumbfounded. He said "Will you marry me?"
I think I said something like are you serious (honestly I don't remember exactly... mom brain) and he's like yes.
Of course I said yes.
And I'm not sure why I didn't call anyone immediately. I guess I wanted it to be "just ours" for a little while. So we moved all my stuff and unpacked a LOT of it before calling my parents, and then his.
We got married 7.5 months later.

You are so right! We were in the Magic Kingdom around 1 am and I was pooped and wanted to go home. DH wanted to stay for the final fireworks and was setting up the camera and on and on, and I wanted to get a bus to our hotel and sleep. Pretty much as I lost all patience with the camera shenanigans, he pulled the ring box out of his pocket and asked me to marry him as the fireworks started!
I give him a lot of credit - he survived getting in the way of my dad's tiramisu when asking for his permission and learning that we have a family jeweler!
