Babies: 6 - 9 Months

I had no idea teethng would be this bad :(

My happy easy-going baby woke up this morning extremely irritable and with a fever (his first one ever).  It got up to 101.4, but has been slowly going down.  He is just miserable.  He cries everytime I move him.  Even when he is playing and smiles I can tell it still hurts.  I feel like I want to cry for him.

I did call the pedi's exchange just to make sure the fever wasn't a bigger issue, and since he doesn't have any other symptoms of concern they said I could give him some tylenol, which seemed to help a little.

Tell me this will get better very soon.  Like by tomorrow morning!

  • If I were you, I'd take him into the pediatrician and have him checked out. 101.4 is a high fever to be considered a teething fever. My pediatrician told me that she's never seen a babies temp get higher than 100.5 with teething.

  • Teething certainly isn't fun.  Just give Tylenol (ibuprofen is after 6mos) and make sure your LO has plenty of things to chew on.  Both my boys have always preferred softer stuff like fabric (bibs and burp cloths are big winners).  Some kids like to chew and mouth on cold stuff or harder things.  Just offer a variety and see what he tends to go for.  Teething isn't something that is over quickly, and by that I mean once the teething starts you have a lot more teeth to go.

    This.

When you take your LO in, they may not have an answer for you, tho.  They told us to bring her in if a fever was over 100.  I did that, they thought it was a virus (just rotate Motrin/Tylenol), & it turned out to be Roseola!  They still couldn't really do anything, but it's nice to know what's going on w/ your LO>

  • What kind of thermometer were you using?  Depending on kind, you may have to add or subtract a degree.  The one I use (underarm) you have to add a degree to get the same temp a rectal would use (even says to do this in the directions).

I thought the same thing, which is why I called.  If it is still high in the morning I plan to take him in.  It was 100.1 when I put him to bed tonight.

  • DS pediatrician doesn't care how high the fever is....he cares how the baby is acting.  Over memorial day weekend DS had a fever that creeped over 102 and pedi said it was fine because DS wasn't acting sick at all.  It went down after 48 hours and he was no worse for the wear.  But, if it seems to hurt LO to move them I would definitely bring them in.
  • DS has been teething since 3 mos but only had a low-grade fever once, like 99 something. That being said...it wasn't over quickly because he didn't even cut the first tooth until recently, and the second was nearly 2 weeks later.

He obviously has more to come, but it's been a nightmare still with him because he seems to have a low tolerance to teething pain.
