Natural Birth

3 emergency C-sections in 1 week. wtf?

Hi ladies. I've lived in the same area for six years and I haven't ever heard a good birthing story about this hospital. Last week three ladies I know delivered there and all of them had to have emergency C-sections. One of them was told she couldn't get out of bed to use the birthing ball because it would cause her blood pressure to spike. Then they gave her an epidural and all kinds of drugs and her BP bottomed out.

I know ppl are more likely to tell you about a bad birth than a good one, but still. What are the odds of three ladies I know having emergency csections in one week, at the same hospital? Would you be looking into going to a different hospital too?

  • As much as I agree that you're only likely to hear wonderful or awful reviews, if I had never heard any good stories about a hospital, I wouldn't be going there.

Are your choices limited by where your OB or midwife has priviledges, or by your insurance? Have you checked yelp and other online reviews of that hospital and others near you to give you a broader picture of others' experiences?

Its a military hospital so they are exempt from alot of the oversight/reviews that civilian hospitals are under. I called to ask their c-section rate and no one in L&D knew what it was. They didn't seem to think they had to keep track of it.

I'm not attached to my OB, I don't even think he will be the one delivering me. The OB team and the L&D team seem to be completely separate ppl. I wanted to switch to a civilian hospital when I first got PG but they told me that because there was scheduling availability at the military hops, our insurance (TriCare) would deny the referral. That was BS. I'm going to see what I can do to get over to the civilian place next week.

I was seeing a fantastic civilian OB/GYN who delivers at the hosp I want before i got PG but then my referral expired and I had to go back to the military hosp. I hope she can take me back this late in the game.
