Stored breastmilk (for 6 months)

Has anyone used frozen breastmilk that has been stored for 6 months yet (in the regular freezer - not a deep freezer)?

I read (kellymom.com) that breastmilk can be stored in the regular freezer for up to 6 months (depending on the individual's milk).

Just curious if it's normal for it to last that long and if other's are able to use there's after that long of time.

I just have a shi!t load of frozen breastmilk and I'm not anticipating have to use it for a couple more months at least.

Thanks!

  • Your LO won't take it if there's something up with it.  It should be fine.  Especially if you didn't have it in the freezer door or something.

  • I just rotate the supply every 4 months or so.I use just freezer stuff for a while and restock my freezer supply with each pump.

  • I gave my DS some of my freezer supply a few days ago ( i tasted it, and smelled it and it seemed fine) Ds woke up around 11pm screaming. He was up until 5. It gave him the worst stomach ache. It was horrible. I threw it all away. It just wasnt worth the risk again.

  • I rotate my stock every 2 months. I've read that BM in a reg. freezer is only good for 3-4 months, and that you should really rotate it in sooner because your milk changes as your LO grows older. I'm sure one bottle of it here and there if its still good would be fine though. I would thaw a couple bags and pump some for new freezer stash every few days (its good 24 hours in the fridge) to keep it as fresh as possible.
