Cefdinir/Omnicef users

DS has been taking Cefdinir/Omnicef for 5 days now. He has had a few poops since being on it and all were pretty normal. Today though, it was reddish all throughout. I panicked and thought it was blood, but upon reading side effects from multiple medical websites, I discovered that the combination of iron and Omnicef sometimes turns the stool red.

Has anyone else's LO experienced this?

  • Yes! I freaked and called the pedi.  Totally normal and I got laughed at.  I pointed out that they should tell this to parents.

Ok thanks! I dreaded calling the pedi because 1- I figured it was normal after reading that and 2- We've called/been in to visit like 3 times in the past 2 weeks because of this ear infection... so I didn't want to be the annoying over-anxious first time parent.

But I told my husband the exact same thing- they should DEFINITELY mention that side effect when prescribing it, or even the pharmacist could mention it. It would also save them the headache of taking a bunch of calls for this.

  • The only thing the pedi's office stressed was if their poop turns black and even when you smear it it's still black to call them immediately.  That's when their is a serious issue.  HTH!

Yes except we ended up taking a trip to the ER (she had been severely ill for several days prior to starting the Cefdinir). They said it was a common side effect and that the pharmacy should have notified us. But they tested her poo for blood JIC and it was negative.

  • We had the exact same thing, but ours was explosive red poop the next day.  No one mentioned it to us either so we immediately called the pedi.  They should really mention this.  He had red stools the entire time on it.  We called it taco sauce poop.
