TTC after 35

do progesterone supplements delay menstruation/affect preg test?

I'm taking vaginal progesterone supplements this month for the first time because most months I've had spotting around day 10 post-ovulation. I also took clomid this month, trigger shot, and had an IUI. This was my 5th month of clomid and 4th IUI (with trigger shot). My cycle on clomid has been pretty regular (~ 28 days) with luteal phases no longer than 14 days.

However this month on the supplements I'm on day 15 post-ovulation and still no period. But also all pregnancy tests are BFN.

Does anyone know whether it's usual for progesterone supplements to delay menstruation  or affect pregnancy tests? I don't know whether to get excited that I may be pregnant....

Thanks so much!

  • Progesterone can delay your period, but I would call my dr and ask what he wants me to do. They can have you come in for a beta, then you'll know if you need to keep taking the supplements or if you can stop them. Good luck, I hope it goes your way.

  • AF doesn't arrive for me until 3-5 days after I stop the progesterone.

  • Prog delays your period. Once I stopped, my period would show up within 24-48 hours.

    I was on 100mg.

I'm so glad you posted this b/c I'm starting progesterone tomorrow.  Had no idea it delayed your period and my Dr told me to take it until AF arrives, never said it might be delayed or not arrive.

    Same for me.

Also, progesterone can act as birth control.  So ck with your RE to see when they want you to stop if you keep getting BFN.

  • Thanks all for the words of wisdom! The progesterone did delay AF but sadly she came last month. The progesterone did prevent early spotting so hopefully it's doing it's job and strengthening my uterus during the luteal phase. This month I'm doing menopur shots in addition to progesterone and IUI/HCG. Fingers crossed!
