We started around 6 months as well. It takes some practice. At first, he'd just chew on the spout. Then he learned how to latch on and suck, but acted like he was drowning when the water came out. Lol. Now he can suck and drink the water, but a lot of it still dribbles down his chin and his shirt or bib are soaked at the collar.
Recommendations:
Gerber sippie cups with the handles on the cup are no good. The lid doesn't line up right, so the spout ends up lined up with the handles and they'd have to drink sideways! They're awful. BUT, Gerber makes another sippie cup with the handles on the lid, and they are great. Playtex sippie cups with the handles on the lid are good too.
Another one we didn't like were the Nuby cups with the handles (on the lid). They advertise as having the spout included in the lid so there are no small parts to clean, but the plastic separates from the lid inside (but you can't take it apart), so water gets trapped in there and I was afraid they would mold, so I stopped using them.

Hope that helps!
