The most disturbing thing EVER happened today

I was taking all of the poop diapers out of our Diaper Genie, when I noticed these weird brown things in the bag.  They looked kind of like seeds.  Well, they were WORMS.  Yes, FREAKING WORMS.  There were some little white ones that were moving, but most were brown (pupae?).  I'm so disgusted.  Did a bug lay eggs in there?  I checked DD's poop to make sure she didn't have worms herself.  OMG, it was awful.  I just don't get how they got there!  Blech.

  • I think I'd empty the diaper genie more frequently...what if all those pupae had matured into flies in your house?

  • OMG ... my worst nightmare. How horrible!

This is essentially the reason why we never got a genie... I have a small garbage can with scented liners that I empty everyday ... I know it seems like a pain but something seemed wrong about the genie ...

I'm sure LO is fine and I'm glad you caught it when you did!

  • OMG. I would take the whole thing and put it in the trash.  You might consider also mentioning this to the pediatrician.....it's a longshot that she has some kind of parasite or worms, but just to be sure.

We use the Munchkin diaper thing for pee only (love it, BTW....I threw out the Genie after using it once.).  Each time DS poops the diaper and wipes go into a supermarket bag, tied up and immediately put into the trash.  Like PP said, something seems wrong to leave poop in a container for periods of time.

This. That is so gross; I probably would've thrown up.

We have the Diaper Champ and have never had a problem like that. It also takes regular trash bags, which is a bonus.

  • OMG.  How gross!  I would have freaked.  We used a Diaper Champ with DS and never had anything disgusting like that happen.  We made sure we cleaned it with Lysol every week or so.  Maybe try cleaning yours completely more often?  I'd give it a good hose down, that's for sure.  Or skip it all together and use a Diaper Champ or regular trash can!

  • I hate to say it but I would have your LO checked out.  I can't think of how worms would make their way into your Diaper Genie, given that it's pretty much a sealed unit when the lid is closed.  Poop has bacteria in it naturally, but shouldn't have parasites.

  • If you only had poopy dipes in it, at this stage there is 1 poop/day or less for most LO's so the oldest poopy diaper was probably there 10 days or longer.

Your kid is fine - you left a poopy diaper around too long and it got maggots. Empty the can more often. We put pee and poo dipes in ours so it gets emptied 2x/wk because it gets full.

Curious: why just poo dipes, what do you do with the pee ones?!

This, only I just use grocery bags as a liner.  I've never been a fan of the Diaper Genie.

We have a small trashcan we use for pee diapers.  We started this way back when she had multiple poop diapers daily.  Now that she's not pooping as much, I think we're going to get rid of the diaper genie and just use the small can.  Clearly they were in there too long.  On the plus side, it clearly works because it never smelled.

And, yes, we totally cleaned that out and Lysoled the hell out of it.  NEVER AGAIN will that happen.

  • Were they worms or maggots? Maggots would make a lot more sense because a fly could have gotten in the trash and laid eggs. VOMIT. I would have totally barfed. I would throw that away for sure.

  • Oh Geez!  I would have flipped out and most definitely puked!

We use the Diaper Dekor and I like it.  I empty it once a week on trash days- or if it starts to smell.  But, I also put the poop in the toilet since the changing area is our master bath. I just drop it in and then put the diaper in the Dekor.

  • Thats pretty crazy.. The other day I was changing mine out and I saw a bunch of  those gnats that you see during the summer months, in there.  I change mine out every day or at the most two because I have twins so it gets full pretty fast.  It was pretty gross.  Ever since then I started spraying it with lysol and its been fine.
