How long does it take your LO to fall asleep for a nap?

We're in the midst of Ferberizing, mostly for naps...and it doesn't seem to be doing a damn thing.

DS falls asleep beautifully at night -- he always has. Last night he was out in about 30 seconds after laying him down. But naps are a completely different story. I used to rock him to sleep, but it was getting to the point that it was taking 20+ minutes, and the minute I'd lay him down, he'd wake up. So I'm giving Ferber a shot.

At this point, he CAN fall asleep on his own, it's just taking FOR.EV.ER. He never gets to the point of all out crying, but he cries (well, loudly fusses) for almost every nap -- rarely does he go down without a fight. It's taking 30 minutes or so almost every.single.time.

I don't know what the eff to do. I can't keep rocking him to sleep, but I can't listen to him crying, either. And yes, I've tried EVERY prop in the book (paci, white noise, complete silence, etc).

So my question really is...how long does it take your LO to fall asleep for a nap? I keep reading about people that are able to lay their LO down for a nap and they're out within minutes....

  • I am absolutely no help... I feed her to sleep for naps. I'll just sit her on my lap, turn on the tv, give her the bottle and wait for her to pass out. Works about 80% of the time. The other 20%, she fights naps, and we give her a good 30 - 60 minutes to fall asleep, before we give up.

  • Ryan's naps range anywhere from 15 minute catnaps to 2.5 hour marathon naps! Usually an hour or so is normal for him.

  • Now that Cole is crawling and able to sit up on his own, he plays in his crib for about 20 minutes before he actually lays down and falls asleep. Before he was mobile, I could lay him down awake with his paci and lovey and he would be out within a couple minutes. We are blessed with a child that loves to sleep (just like Mom and Dad!).
  • DS used to be the same way until fairly recently.  He starts fussing after being awake 2.5-3 hours.  At that point it's time to feed him again anyways so he usually nurses to sleep.  Nap #1 is always very easy...any others can be a bear!

  • If I put DS down for a nap within a specific window of time, he will almost always go immediately to sleep.  If it's too early or too late (even by just a few minutes) it usually takes him much longer.

He also still takes his morning nap in his swing, and that thing always puts him to sleep within minutes.

  • I'm no help either, I could have written your post.  But I wanted to let you know you aren't the only one who's having trouble!  GL!
  • I still hold him for most naps when we're together.  He's napping in my arms right now.  takes about 15 min for him to fall asleep and he'll sleep for about an hour.  It's about the only chance we get to snuggle

WOW!!!  Really????  DS hasnt done this for a long time...He would have to be beyond tired to do this but then again we have trained him to sleep in his crib.
