Babies: 6 - 9 Months

When and how to introduce finger foods?

OMG this is my 2nd baby and somehow I can't remember a thing about this.  DS1 was eating almost straight table food by 9 months but for the life of me I can't remember how we got there.  I am scared to give this guy anything but a puff.  I gave him a chunk of banana yesterday and he pulled off a chunk. I pulled it out of his mouth and grabbed the banana away. HELP!

Re: When and how to introduce finger foods?

  • Bryson started with just puffs.  And about 4 weeks ago, I cooked up some orzo and mixed a little sweet tater puree with it and let him eat that.  Then we moved on to some shredded cheese...

He just woke up one day and decided he wasn't eating purees anymore.  I think you just need to relax a bit.

Cut the naner up into bite sided pieces and let your LO enjoy mushing it around. Avocado is good for that too :-)

Hang in there. I know finger foods are scary b/c I was TERRIFIED to start them, but remember how easy it got when your 1st LO started eating what you ate? :-)

  • We just started at 6 months which is earlier than when we started with my son.  I started with puffs and she inhaled them... Then we just started giving her little bites of soft foods we eat at dinner.  She has gummed everything and loved it!  Now she's refusing solid veggies bc. I think she wants the real thing!!

So far she's had meatballs, chicken, noodles, carrots, potatoes, puffs, biter buscuits, bread, pancakes, etc... She has not spit any of it out.

I wish I would have done the same thing with my son.... he had a really hard time with texture.
