Babies: 6 - 9 Months

"You got a big one there"

So its been bugging me all day and I finally got DS to sleep so I can come on here and kinda vent to you ladies.

I took DS to the store today. I had to use the infant seat because DH took the car with his big boy car seat today. When I got to the store he was sleeping so I just but his seat in a cart.

The lady checking me out said to me "You got a big one there." I didn't know how to respond to that. I just looked at her funny and said "umm...yeah" How do you respond to something like that?

I'm thinking his infant seat made him look bigger than he is. But either way why would anyone say something like that?

  • "You got a big one."

"Um, a big what?" look innocent.

    "Your baby..."

    "I HAVE A BABY!?"

  • I just say "yeah he's pretty big." To be fair, it's true enough.

It's not as if saying a baby is big is the same as saying your mother is big....one is acceptable and the other isn't. No one means any harm. I get comments all the time and as a mom, your brain goes to average height/weight for your baby's age and you feel the need to explain that no, your kid is NOT big, he's perfectly normal and healthy thankyouverymuch.

But in reality, people just don't know much about it. Sorry it bothered you. I know you never expect those types of comments. And I'm sure your baby IS totally normal.

  • I know what's it's like to be bothered by other people's comments, but I'm sure she didn't mean anything negative by the comment. When Tegan was a newborn we would constantly get comments about how tiny she was. This always upset me because she was struggling with weight gain (due to bfing issues) and the comments just made my worry and stress that much more difficult.

Now I laugh, because people comment all the time about how big she is, but in all honesty she's barely in the 25th percentile for height and weight. People have absolutely no concept of what height/weight a 6 month old baby should be and so, when they make comments, I ignore them and move on my way.

PS Don't you wish that we had the ability to run comments by the ladies on the bump before we respond to people's comments? I think I'm definitely going to use the "What, I have a baby?" response next time we get an unwanted comment about Tegan.

  • Are you uncomfortable with his size? People tell me my child looks like a 3 month old because she is so small, I couldn't care less. She is a baby.

Now, I would be offended if she were like, 12 and struggling with her weight... but it's two completely different scenarios.

  • This is from DH:

"You got a big one there."

"Thanks. Now how far along are you?"

This.  Lanie is HUGE and I love when people say she's big!  But that's probably b.c my other daughter Julia was 15oz when she was born.  I love big healthy babies!!

Not at all! At 4 months he was struggling with weight gain because of reflux. So I love that he's back up to normal. I just thought her presentation was rude. Even saying you've got a big boy there or if she couldn't tell he was a boy even sayng baby seems better than calling him a big one.
