Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Water/Juice/Yogurt?

When can these 3 things be introduced?

I forgot to ask my pedi. at my DS's 6 month appt. I plan on calling tomorrow but I wanted to know what you ladies were told. Thanks so much!

Re: Water/Juice/Yogurt?

  • Ive read yogurt at 8 months, my pedi told me I could put water in a sippy with our meals, and I am not doing juice til he's 2 and even then only in small amounts.

  • I do water with any solid meals, in a sippy.  Yogurt I introduced at 6 months, when we started solids, but I do plain and add my own fruit.  Juice I don't do unless DD is really constipated and then only diluted, so 1/2 juice, 1/2 water (about 2-3 oz total).  They really don't get that much nutrition from juice (as compared to actual fruit) and it has lots of sugar (even if it is no sugar added, it's still a concentrated amount of natural sugars).  I'd love to just avoid it completely at this point, but DD has been having trouble transitioning to solid poops and it helps better than anything else.
  • My pedi said to start water in a sippy cup at 6 months.  Yogurt wasn't mentioned, but I think 8 months is OK (haven't started it yet).  Juice has been a somewhat regular thing since we started solids.  DS gets really constipated, so prune juice has been needed!  We've always put ~1 oz juice with ~7 oz milk though.  We've just started 1/2 and 1/2 juice/water in a sippy per the doctor's advice.
