If your LO is a thumb sucker...

Do they get a rash on their thumbs?  DD has it on both thumbs and I'm kinda at a loss on how to treat it.... it's similar to the rash she'll get on her face sometimes, which goes away when I put Aquaphor on it, but I don't want to put Aquaphor on her thumbs since they'll wind up in her mouth.

  • It's excema, and I am waiting for DS to have this too.  Have you asked your pedi what to do?

Oh my gracious goodness your siggy pic!

She has kind of a blister at the base of her thumbs. It's sad but I don't know what to do for it. She doesn't act like it bothers her.

  • DD was and is a thumb sucker.  She did get a rash for a while when she first started to figure out thumb sucking, but it went away.  We just kept it moisturized so that it didn't turn into a crack or an open soar.

We put aquaphor on it and didn't worry about it getting in her mouth.  But you could try something for lips if you're worried about it.  Those are usually safe for the mouth because of the area they are used on.

It probably isn't eczema, which both of my kids have/had (DD's cleared up around 12 months) unless you LO has eczema in other areas, then it could be.  But if it is just in one spot it is unlikely.  The thumb is probably just chapped from all the moisture and the sucking "pressure" can affect it too.

  • We actually use Landolin on her thumbs.  We have a ton left over and it is safe for her to eat.
